Magic (paranormal) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magical beliefs and practices are common in many cultures and religions.
Muslims, followers of the religion of Islam, believe in magic, and forbid practice of it (Siher).
The conceptual relationship between religion and magic is similar to the relationship between "religion" and Paganism, whereas "religion" refers to a system of established beliefs, and "magic" and "Pagan" are labels used by people within that system to describe beliefs and practices that conflict with or are outside of that system.

 Magic
Barbarous word is basically synonymous with magical word and often the names of spirits and god in traditional ceremonial magic are referred to as barbarous names because their origin is often a combination of languages (excepting the names of god which are Hebrew).
Associative magic rather than defining things by what they aren't in the same sense by which definitive magic removes a given thing from that which it is not, associative magic builds a concept of a thing by connecting it to things which share aspects of the thing.
When magic is based around a religious functionary the use of spirits and a spirit world are common in explaining magic and magical action.

 Magic
Magic played an everyday part in the lives of people living close to the land, as their survival depended on the health of their crops, and living in harmony with the earth is a basic tenet of many of the modern revivals of magic and witchcraft, such as Wicca and shamanism.
Originating perhaps with the dawn of civilization, magic is the manipulation of unseen forces to cause change in both the realm in which we live and the realm of the unknown.

White magic was concerned with the evocations of angels, spiritual beings supposed to be essentially superior to mankind, concerning which I shall give some further details later--and the spirits of the elements,--which were, as I have mentioned in "Some Characteristics of Mediaeval Thought," personifications of the primeval forces of Nature.

Norwich Moot's Page on Ceremonial Magic
Ceremonial Magic is a path to the Mysteries, as is Witchcraft, and the Mysteries overlap and transcend all professed religions.
But one does not have to be a Pagan to be a ceremonial Magician: there are many who profess Christianity, or other religions.
The overlap became less clear in the twentieth century, even though ceremonial magic was a major force in the birth of modern Pagan Witchcraft, whether through the direct influence of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, or via more secret traditions.
