Cantillation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cantillation (Hebrew: ta`amei ha-mikra or just te`amim; Yiddish trope is also commonly used in English) comprises special signs or marks in the Masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible (or Tanakh) which complement the letters and vowel points.
A primary purpose of the cantillation signs is to guide the chanting of the sacred texts during public worship.
The cantillation signs also provide information on the syntactical structure of the text and some say they are a commentary on the text itself, highlighting important ideas musically.

Synagogal Music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Earliest of all is the cantillation of the Scriptures, in which the traditions of the various rites differ only as much and in the same manner from one another as their particular interpretations according to the text and occasion differ among themselves.
This principle has marked effects in the Ashkenazic or Northern tradition, where it is as clear in the rendering of the prayers as in that of the Scriptural lessons, and is also apparent in the Ḳerobot.
It existed, as the cantillation of Scripture shows, even before the recital of the services was entrusted to the ḥazzan as the specialist.

The written notation for cantillation was developed by a group known as the Masoretes (from the Hebrew word Mesorah, meaning "tradition"), active as early as the sixth century, but who may have been recording much more ancient practices.
The musical components of the synagogue service are cantillation, nusah, hymns, and in some communities, niggunim.
These sections of the Bible are read by one member of the congregation while the rest of the congregation listens.

It also discusses the principle of parallel tonalities in synagogue cantillation, claiming it to be ancient; it refers to the Temple cantillation of the Psalms; and it discusses various interpretations of the notation.
It claims that the cantillation preceded its notation, gives early references to the practice, discusses the relationship between chironomy and the notation, and cites the loss of one kind of cantillation (that of the Three Books) while claiming the vigorous survivance of the other (that of the Twnety-One Books).

 Shavuot - Joseph Ofer
Rather, it is the way the cantillation marks indicate the division into verses: the Ten Commandments are divided into ten verses, each commandment read as an entire verse.
Looking at a printed Bible with cantillation signs, one sees that in addition to the "upper cantillation marks" the verses of the Ten Commandments have other cantillations marks as well, called "lower cantillation marks." Commentators and scholars have sought to explain and discover the origins of this double marking, as we shall do, as well.
Although the upper cantillation system which we find in our Bibles is Tiberian, it appears that this system came to the Land of Israel at a later stage, possibly under Babylonian influence.

Cantillation of Scripture, a focus of worship on Mondays and Thursdays (the market days), Sabbaths, New Moons, holy days, and fast days, featured the chanting of a verse, followed by its translation into the vernacular and (perhaps) its immediate exegesis to the public.
This could have been the origin of the tradition, that later became the norm, of dividing all verses, even the prose ones, into half-verses.

They do at least agree that the tradition of cantillating the scriptures is a very old one, and was probably firmly established in tradition before the Massoretes began their work.
The tradition of cantillating the scriptures was originally an oral tradition, continued and supported by chironomy, and eventually written down by the Massoretes, but even today this tradition is still largely oral.
However, he also admitted that there is a very loose relationship between the cantillation signs and their traditional meanings, and the names of the signs do not give any precise idea of their meanings.

Each instance of a cantillation mark was assigned a position (1 for the first sign in the verse, 2 for the second, 3 for the third, etc.)
In the Middle Ages, and as late as the twentieth century in certain Jewish communities such as those of Rome, Cairo, and Yemen, a signer cued the congregation to cantillation marks by means of chironomy or hand signals.
Since a thousand years of unrecorded harmonic and phonetic transformations separated the punctuators from the authors of the Bible, cantillation and diacritical marks do not accurately reflect historical phenomena of the biblical period, notes and vowels the rabbis had never heard.

The equivalent of the full stop is the Sof Pasuq, the end of the Bible verse, which was also the basis of verse numbering (so verse division is a Jewish invention, while verse numbering and chapter division is a later Christian invention).
While there is an abundance of how a Bible verse may be structured, there is one general pattern: Virtually all verses consist of two halves with an Atnach between.

It is not a descriptive approach to cantillation: it does not describe the sequence of occurences of cantillation signs in a verse, instead, it lists all the occurences of prescribed cantillation patterns.
However informative these signs can be, research has practically been oriented to just the primary aspect of the text, i.e., to its consonantal form, the form scriptures were traditionally written in: concordances, the basic tools of textual research have only considered these consonantal forms.
