 Canaanite religion
In the Jewish Bible (the Christian Old Testament) Canaanite religion is portrayed as one of the most enemical to Yahweh, the Judeo-Christian deity.
Canaanite religion was the group of belief systems utilized by the people living in the ancient Levant throughout the Bronze Age and Iron Age.
Influenced strongly by Mesopotamian religious practices, Canaanite religious beliefs were polytheistic, with families typically focusing worship on household gods while acknowledging the existance of other deities such as Baal and El.

 Canaanite culture and religion
The religion of the Canaanites was an agricultural religion, with pronounced fertility motifs.
Many Israelites succumbed to the allurements of the fertility-laden rituals and practices of the Canaanite religion, partly because it was new and different from the Yahwistic religion and, possibly, because of a tendency of a rigorous faith and ethic to weaken under the influence of sexual attractions.
As the Canaanites and the Israelites began to live in closer contact with each other, the faith of Israel tended to absorb some of the concepts and practices of the Canaanite religion.

Canaan & Ancient Israel @ University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology
Canaanite religion was based on the worship of local deities in local temples, but included widely held myths and rituals.
Canaanite deities were organized in a pantheon: El the creator, his consort Athirat (Asherah), the storm god Ba'al, and his sister Anat, a goddess of hunting and warfare.
These mythic deities appear as local deities of Canaanite cities in the southern Levant, both in the Bible and in inscriptions.

 Canaanite and Phoenician religions
Canaanite religion and its symbols and gods are mentioned over and over again in the Old Testament, and there also many similarities in ideas and in rituals.
The religions of the peoples of this region, Phoenicians, Moabites, Canaanites, Hebrews etc, did have regional differences, and according to our sources there was never any form of unifying the ideas, rituals and pantheons across the region.
Early on in the religions of this region we see that the Mother Goddess was the subject of important cults (at this point in history it is not correct to use the terms "Canaanite" or "Phoenician").

Father Gods: El, Abba, Yahweh, Elohim, Paraclete (Holy Spirit "Comforter")
Canaanite and Phoenician society was depraved (child sacrifice, sex slavery, vicious torture and execution methods, etc.) and so they made their gods and goddesses as violent and sexually perverse as themselves.
As the god, El was, in accordance with the general irrationality and moral grossness of Canaanite religion, a dim and shadowy figure, who, Philo says, had three wives, who were also his sisters, and who could readily step down from his eminence and become the hero of sordid escapades and crimes.

 Hatzor
In the semitic languages, the name is reminiscent of that of the last Canaanite king of Hatzor, Yavin, known from the Bible.
On one of its sides, a circle with a cross in the center — the divine symbol of the Canaanite storm god — is carved in low relief.
The conflagration is mentioned in the Bible, emphasizing the complete destruction of Hatzor during the conquest of Canaan by the Israelites: But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hatzor only; that did Joshua burn.

Canaanite religion, a fertility or nature religion, reflected the major concerns of the populace — increase and productivity.
The language was deciphered and the myths translated, providing many parallels to Canaanite practices condemned in the Bible and making it possible to suggest that the religion of Ba'al as practiced in Ugarit was very much like that of the Canaanites of Palestine.
Until recently, information about Canaanite belief was drawn largely from the negative statements in the Bible, but since 1928 new data has been forthcoming.

The cultural interaction with the Canaanites (see Israelite Religion to Judaism: the Evolution of the Religion of Israel) was even more problematic.
The authors-editors-redactors of the Bible loathed and denounced Canaanite Religion not least because the common Israelite people had been attracted by it.
The first occasion, was when the Israelites identified him with their God YHWH, appropriating a number of Canaanite El’s titles or epithets, as part of the process of developing the monotheism of the Torah.

The Phoenician era saw a shift in Canaanite religion.

 Ugarit and the Bible
This Biblical denunciation of these Canaanite gods received a fresh face when the Ugaritic texts were discovered, for at Ugarit these were the very gods that were worshipped.
The reason for this is simple to understand; the people of Israel worshipped these gods along with, and sometimes instead of, Yahweh, the God of Israel.
The ancient Canaanite city-state of Ugarit is of utmost importance for those who study the Old Testament.
