Caliph - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Caliph is the term or title for the Islamic leader of the Ummah, or community of Islam.
Caliphs were often also referred to as Amīr al-Mu'minīn (أمير المؤمنين) "Commander of the Faithful", or, more colloquially, leader of the Muslims.
None of the early caliphs claimed to receive divine revelations, as did Muhammad; none of them claimed to be a nabī, "a prophet" or a "rasul" or divine messenger.

 Caliphs - All About Turkey
Caliph was the person acting in Muhammad's place after his death, i.e.
This time, the caliphate of Ali, came with the two schismas that has impregnated Islam ever since, when first there was a break between the majority and a group now known as Kharijis, and later between the group now known as Shi'is and the Sunnis.
The Caliph carried other titles, that were less modest, as they were not relative to Muhammad, but to the Muslim community.

Catholic Answers Forums - Sunni view of Caliph Yazid?
In Sunni Islam, the caliph should be the best Muslim in the ummah and should govern with consultation, so Mu'awyia's and Yazid's rule in the eyes of Sunni are against the principles of the faith, but they recognize that 'Ali held no special entitlement to rule except that he was chosen to by the ummah.
Because 'Ali Bin Abu Talib was the last caliph who was elected and governed by consultation of the Muslim ummah, as required by the Qur'an.
He's also seen as rightful caliph, and like his brother Hassan and his father 'Ali, he is divinely inspired, infallible and embodies the spirit of the Prophet (PBUH).

Amazon.com: God's Caliph : Religious Authority in the First Centuries of Islam (University of Cambridge Oriental ...
Caliphs are central to the faith both as they are 1) the defining figures representing the coherence of the religious community and 2) as the community's leaders, they act, even in error, as its principle guide.
Originally the caliph was both head of state and ultimate source of religious law; the Sunni pattern represents the outcome of a conflict between the caliph and early scholars who, as spokesmen of the community, assumed religious leadership for themselves.
Hind and Crone build on this to assert that the transformation from the concept of sunna as `generally accepted practice' to the more stringent and dogmatically weighty sunna of the Prophet is an artifact of the struggle for religious legitimacy that occurred between the emerging, piety-minded culam' and the Umayyads.

It should be taken in history that the Caliphate institute -which started in early Islamic history- ended with Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's reforms.
Thus a pan-Islamic governmental vision might (for instance) posit a federation of Muslim nations under a global Islamic authority, headed by a leader whose authority might be enhanced (though I doubt seriously that it would be sparked) by some kind of proclamation from the Turkish parliament.

The Caliph's House — in Arabic, Dar Khalifa — was a place that could have tempted even more prosaic souls into flights of grandiosity.
Even more alarming, it would turn out, was what Shah couldn't see with the naked eye.

The murder of Uthman at the hands of discontented Egyptians and the accession of Ali to the caliphate in 656 gave Muawiya the opportunity to expand his power.
Ali had his own difficulties establishing his legitimacy, and by the time he requested Muawiya to give him the oath of allegience, the Syrian population was generally of the opinion that Ali was responsible for Uthman's murder; thus, Muawiya refused to pay him allegience.
Later generations of Muslims held conflicting views about his reign: to some, he was a clever and successful ruler, while to others, he usurped the caliphate and deviated from the practice of Muhammad and the "Four Righteous Caliphs".

Chances are Israel would not have existed, the oil wealth from Iraq would be spent wisely on infrastructure, and the Caliphate would probably become a unifying spiritual force for Muslims around the world directing them towards moderation.
The investiture of a Sovereign/Caliph as the supreme and ecumenical Islamic authority is likely to generate more dissent than unity in the Islamic world.
