Buddhism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Buddhist canon of scripture is known in Sanskrit as the Tripitaka and in Pāli as the Tipitaka.
The international Buddhist flag was designed in Sri Lanka in the 1880s with the assistance of Henry Steele Olcott and was later adopted as a symbol by the World Fellowship of Buddhists.
Buddhism is a religion and philosophy based on the teachings of the Buddha, Siddhārtha Gautama, a prince of the Shakyas, whose lifetime is traditionally given as 566 to 486 BCE.

 Indian Philosophy
The 2nd-century Buddhist Nagarjuna and the 7th-century Buddhist Dharmakirti are two of the greatest thinkers in classical Indian philosophy.
Indian philosophy of the later classical and modern periods (1200 to present) may be distinguished from most Indian religious and spiritual thought.
In ancient Indian philosophy (before 100 BC), philosophy and religion cannot be meaningfully separated, primarily because of the cultural integration of religious practices and mystical pursuits.

As generally Buddhists do not ascribe to the belief in a sentient, all-pervasive Creator, some claim that Buddhism fails to be a religion.
He is known as the father of the Buddhist education movement since he initiated the establishment of close to 400 Buddhist schools and colleges in Sri Lanka.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHY
The Buddha intended his philosophy to be a practical one, aimed at the happiness of all creatures.
Another main teaching of Buddhist metaphysics is known as the Three Marks of Existence.
Buddhism may be considered a religion, a philosophy, a way of life, or all three; here we will deal mainly with Buddhism as a philosophical system.

 Buddhist Bioethics
There are signs, however, that a Buddhist perspective on certain aspects of medical treatment is beginning to appear, for example Epstein (1993) and Kabat-Zinn's (1990, 1994) integration of Buddhist meditation into medical practice, and the growing literature on Buddhism and social justice, such as Jones (1989) and Sizemore and Swearer (1993).
Before modern embryology, however, in both Buddhist countries and the West, ideas about conception were scientifically inaccurate, and often associated the beginning of life with events in the third or fourth month of pregnancy (for a discussion of traditional Tibetan embryology, see Dhonden, 1980 and Lecso,1987).
The themes of impermanence, decay and death are omnipresent in Buddhist literature.

 Buddhist Philosophy
Buddhists believe correct human behavior is necessarily based on correct action, speech and thought, and good Buddhists devote their lives to seeking truth and knowledge.
If the definition of philosophy, “love of wisdom,” includes the wisdom gained by human beings in their search for the extinction of suffering, Buddhism is a real philosophy because it contains many ways to achieve the wisdom necessary to free oneself from the fetters of defilement.

The Yogacara School of the Mahayana Buddhist Philosophy
The Buddhist philosophical school of Yogacara established in the frames of Mahayanistic Buddhism is one of the most complex and interesting phenomena of the philosophical trends of traditional India.
But in any case the school of Yogacara Buddhist philosophy is one of the most profound and subtle Indian philosophical system spreading with the Buddhist religion all along Eastern and Central Asia.
It is also determined by the fundamental Buddhist problem, that is living being and its liberation from the bondage of Samsara.

Why I Emphasize the Whole System of Buddhist Philosophy
The fifth and last reason for emphasizing the whole system of Buddhist philosophy is because of the tendency toward and the need for an international religion, unified and accepted by the whole world.
The third reason for emphasizing the whole system of Buddhist philosophy is because of the necessity of harmonization between the various Buddhist schools.
However, as most scholars of each school are not aware of the importance of the whole system of Buddhist philosophy, they keep their old heritage and cling to their own partial doctrine of Buddhism as the whole system.

Basic Teachings and Philosophical Doctrines of Buddhism
Buddhist scriptures are called the Tripit.aka, or the "Three Baskets," consisting of the Sutrapit.aka, the Buddha's sermons, the Vinayapit.aka, the monastic rules, and the Abhidharmapit.aka, early philosophical treatises.
While many Buddhists now no longer worry about the problem of the fading Dharma, there is no denying the statement of the Buddha, or the role that dealing with this has played in the history of Buddhism.
Japanese Buddhist "missions" in Korea helped discredit Buddhism to many, resulting in large numbers of Koreans converting to Christianity.

Buddhist philosophy, Indian : Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy Online
Later generations of Buddhists spent much energy in criticizing Brahmanical claims of the supremacy of the Veda; at the same time, Buddhists tended to place their confidence in a combination of experience and reason.
Most of the issues addressed by Buddhist philosophers in India stem directly from the teachings attributed to Siddhārtha Gautama, known better through his honorific title, the Buddha.
Since the Buddha saw human frustration as an effect of misunderstandings concerning human nature, it was natural for Buddhist philosophers to attend to questions concerning the true nature of a human being.

 Readings in Buddhist Philosophy
The third phase of Buddhist philosophy is the formation of schools of Buddhist philosophy.
The readings in Buddhist philosophy are from early Buddhist dialogues found among the earliest Buddhist writings.
The problem of explaining Buddhist concepts to people who lived outside the milieu of Indian thinking was severe and challenged the ingenuity of Buddhist thinkers who wanted to be understood while remaining true to the original doctrine.

an issue of Pali Buddhist philosophy
This yields the major problem I see with the Buddhist view as influenced by process philosophy.
Even if conditions are necessary for other conditions, such as in attaining enlightenment, I do not see how Buddhists justify any type of causal link.
For example, the conditions that ignorance and craving must cease in order for samsara to stop, seems equivalent to saying that one causes the other; that cessation causes enlightenment.

It is my hope that this further insight into Buddhism will help the reader to understand where he/she stands with the Buddhist framework and to make the changes necessary to continue their transformation.
While most Western Buddhists have been exposed to "The Four Noble Truths" and "The Eight-Fold Path", many have no idea how to put these lofty ideals into concrete practice.
