Brethren - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The brethren from 1827 [1]---those endeavoring to continue the expression of "the one body in Christ" worldwide in the scriptural order, as intended in God's revival of the early 1800's, and encourage all saints to "unity of the faith", rather than mergers and sectarianism.
The Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the Brethren in Christ Church (or River Brethren) owe their origins to the combined labors of Reformed pastor Philip William Otterbein and Mennonite Martin Boehm, beginning in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the latter half of the 18th century.
The Social Brethren originated in Saline County, Illinois in 1867, the result of an attempt to put the slavery issue away in favor of uniting on a common belief in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

 Religious Movements Homepage: The Brethren
The Brethren, officially known as the German Baptists throughout the nineteenth century (Melton, 441), mixed pietism with the Anabaptist tradition, blending a renewed emphasis on spirituality with the Anabaptist emphasis on outward expression of faith.
From the outset, the Brethren set themselves apart from mainstream society and even mainstream Protestantism, thus separating themselves from a "sinful world." They were deeply committed to fulfilling the "primitive church model" as laid out in the New Testament -- they wanted to restore the church as Jesus had left it (Bowman, 1995:26).

Birthed from the larger Mennonite Church in 1860 through a process of spiritual revival with a desire for closer fellowship, this group incorporated the title Brethren simply because of their spiritual kinship which was a outcome of meeting in small household groups for prayer and Bible study.

Note: in the USA the Christian brethren are known as the Plymouth Brethren - this is not a term we use in the UK since the term 'Plymouth Brethren' is a separate group that some consider to be a sect.
Whilst these days many assemblies in the UK diverge from these practices, the aim should always be to maintain a simple, New Testament church approach to all we do.
