Paddler Magazine Online : Big Water on the Brahmaputra
Traversing 1,000 miles of the Tibetan plateau, with an average elevation of 10,000 feet, it has the distinction of being the world’s highest river.
Its headwaters begin at Mt. Kailash, a sacred site for both Buddhists and Hindus, and its delta, 2,000 miles later, is Bangladesh, two-thirds of whose acreage is flooded every year by the joined waters of the Brahmaputra and Ganges.
The most famous attempt to ascertain that fact involved an English-trained Indian spy, disguised as a Buddhist pilgrim, who in 1883 planned to toss painted logs into the river above the gorge to be spotted downstream in India.

SECONDARY FLOW AND CHANNEL CHANGE IN BRAIDED RIVERS
To the south of the Brahmaputra River basin the Meghalaya Plateau is made up primarily of gneiss and schists, which form part of the Indian Shield of Precambrian age.
In the north of the Old Brahmaputra floodplain there is a long depression running parallel to the Meghalaya Plateau, to the south the floodplain is level.
The Patkai-Naga ranges to the southeast of the Himalayas are made up of Tertiary formations interlaced by a large number of active faults.

Why does river Brahmaputra remain untamed?
Girdled by the mountain arc which makes a pronounced knee-bend, the Brahmaputra valley in Assam is a terrane under severe deformation, and the Meghalaya massif in the south is faulted in the E–W and transverse directions.
Seismicity of north-eastern India is related to continuing tectonic activities on faults, as borne out by the locations of epicentres.
The block is defined by N–S trending lineaments (presumably tear faults near Guwahati).

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Brahmaputra Valley semi-evergreen forests (IM0105)
The ecoregion lies along the alluvial plains of the Brahmaputra River, which flows through Assam and West Bengal before it becomes confluent with the Ganges River and heads south to the Bay of Bengal.
The substrate consists of deep alluvial deposits, washed down over the centuries by the Brahmaputra and other rivers such as the Manas and Subansiri, which drain southern slopes of the Eastern Himalaya.
Species such as the hispid hare and pygmy hog are found in these grasslands, especially in the soft soils and muddy areas along the river courses.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Indo-China
The principal mountain ranges are the mountains of Assam (the Blue Mountain, 7100 feet), and the Arakan-Yoma between the Brahmaputra and the Irawadi, the Shañ-Yoma, between the latter and the Salwin, which rises to the height of 10,500 feet; the Tanen-taung-gyi Mountains between the Me-kong and the Salwin, (Lai-pang-ngoun in the Shan Country, 8100 feet).
The mountains between the Me-kong and the Song-koi continue southwards as the Annamite Coast Range between the Me-kong and the sea, turn westwards on reaching the south of the peninsula, and, thus describing a figure which may be compared to a rude S, have a very important influence on the climate of the different countries.
In India on the other hand, where all the great rivers, except the Indus, run parallel to the equator, this natural growth of the population could take place without the necessity of encountering absolutely novel climatic and agricultural conditions.
