Book of Obadiah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Book of Obadiah is found in both the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament of the Christian Bible, where it is the shortest book.
Obadiah is classified as a "minor prophet" in the Christian Bible due to the brevity of the writing (only 21 verses) and the content (prophetic material).
The book of Obadiah was written around 845 B.C. The book is based on two topics; the destruction of Edom and the vindication of Judah.

The Book of Zephaniah manages to stretch "God's angry" to about 1600 words, for instance—a reader could walk away from it with the ability to describe the reasons for the Lord's displeasure, how many sausages He had for breakfast, and the cross-stitching pattern on His sandals during the killing.
One key difference between the Book of Obadiah and subsequent BotB books, however, is the target of God’s anger, which, in a surprising twist, isn’t the people of Judea (usually the go-to humans for the Lord's fury).

Obadiah literally means “Servant of the Lord.” This was one of the most common names in the Hebrew Bible.
The shortest book in the Old Testament and among all the writing prophets, Obadiah provides an overview of the message presented in each of the writing prophets: God's judgment on the unbelieving Gentiles who opposed God's chosen people Israel, and God's grace and ultimate deliverance of the believing Israel.
During this time, Obadiah brings the message to the faithful in Judah – a message of doom to those who trust in their own evil practices and wickedness – and a message of comfort and peace to those who continue to trust the Lord in spite of the wickedness around them.

The 8th-9th century midrash, Agadat Bereshit (chapter 14), notes a peculiar problem with the book of Obadiah: “[The book of Obadiah mentions] neither the name of the prophet’s father nor his place of residence.” These questions, in fact, have engaged the early sages and remain a problem which stymies even modern Bible scholars.
Elsewhere, the Talmud makes an effort to associate Obadiah the prophet with King Ahab’s servant of the same name, who was responsible for saving God’s prophets from the treacherous hands of Ahab’s wife, Jezebel.
In rabbinic times, however, several attempts were made to associate Obadiah with more well-known Biblical figures, following the rabbinic tendency to establish definitive identities for lesser known Biblical characters.

Consequently, it should be no surprise that the book of Obadiah, which originally served as a prophecy against the original nation of Edom for joining up with the Babylonians to destroy Jerusalem and the First Temple in 586 BCE, came to be seen as a prophecy regarding the nation of Rome.
In addition, once the Jewish tradition started to associate Edom and Esau with Rome, it became natural to see the book of Obadiah as a prophecy foreshadowing the downfall of this terrible and seemingly indestructible enemy.
This happened, in part, because the original prophecy ultimately came true and the nation of Edom disappeared as a separate entity soon after the destruction of the First Temple.
