It was, however, accepted by the Alexandrian Jews as a work of edification; and through the medium of the Septuagint it passed into the hands of the Christians, among whom it speedily became popular, being often quoted by Athenagoras, Clement of Alexandria, and many others as a work of Jeremiah and as sacred Scripture.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Baruch
Baruch 1:14 says that the book was meant to be read publicly in the Temple; hence it must have been composed in Hebrew for that purpose.
Not only its special title, "The Epistle of Jeremiah", but also its style and contents clearly prove that it is a writing wholly independent of the Prophecy of Baruch.
Besides this unity as regards its original language, Baruch presents a certain unity in point of subject-matter, so that most of those who maintain that the whole work was primitively written in Hebrew admit also its unity of composition.

 Book of Baruch
Baruch is a book of the Old Testament in those versions of the Bible following the Septuagint (generally Roman Catholic and Orthodox).
Baruch is included with the Apocrypha in the King James Version; it does not appear in the Hebrew Bible.
Baruch may have been compiled as late as the 1st or 2nd century AD by an Alexandrian editor using original Hebrew manuscripts; it has been preserved in a Greek version.

 Baruch 1 notes
As Metzger points out, “The book of Baruch is noteworthy as being the only book of the Apocrypha which is formed on the model of the Old Testament prophets, and though it is lacking in originality, one can still detect, even at second-hand, something of the ancient prophetic fire.” See B. Metzger, The Apocrypha, 89.
3 sn The name Baruch in Hebrew means “blessed.” Baruch is described in the Hebrew Bible as an associate and secretary of the prophet Jeremiah.
Internal evidence, some of which will be mentioned in the following notes, suggests that at least some portions of Baruch, and quite possibly all of it, were originally written in Hebrew.

The book Baruch writes for Jeremiah and which the king burns
32 Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like words.
10 Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the entry of the new gate of the LORD'S house, in the ears of all the people.
The events involving the book follow Jeremiah's strong message je20 for which he was imprisoned.

 Baruch
Although Kneucker convinced most scholars that 1:1-3:8 reflected a Hebrew original, there was resistance to the idea that the last two parts (3:9-4:4; 4:5-5:9) were written in Hebrew.
Alberto Soggin writes: "The mention of Jehoiachin and the fact that temple worship appears to be functioning (2.26) has suggested to some scholars that the exile mentioned is that of 597, so that the fifth year would be 593, and therefore a little while after the events narrated in Jer.
The evidence for this hypothesis was laid out by J. Kneucker in Das Buch Baruch (1879), in which a reconstruction of the original Hebrew text was attempted and explained in great detail.

In Christianity it is included among the deuterocanonical books of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, but is listed in the Apocrypha by Protestant churches.
