Dawoodi Bohras - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bohras - Religion and Spirituality  ( http://www.dawoodi-bohras.com/issues/rel_spirit.htm) by
The ordinary Bohra is highly conscious of his identity and this is especially demonstrated at religious and traditional occasions by the appearance and attire of the participants.
The Dawoodi Bohras are a very closely-knit community which seeks advice from the high priest ( da'i) in both spiritual and temporal aspects.

The Institute of Ismaili Studies: Ismaili Communities - South Asia
The Bohras, like other Shi‘i Muslims, were periodically persecuted in South Asia, and many converted to Sunni Islam, the religion of the Muslim rulers of Gujarat and elsewhere.
In 1785 the headquarters of the da‘wa organization of the Da‘udi Bohras were transferred to Surat, still a centre of traditional Islamic and Ismaili learning for the Da‘udi Bohras.
Early in the sixteenth century the headship of the Musta‘li Ismailis passed to an Indian from Sidhpur, and later the headquarters of this Ismaili community were transferred permanently from Yemen to Ahmadabad, where the da‘i could generally count on the religious tolerance of the Mughal emperors.

 About Bohras
The Dawoodi Bohra community traces its spiritual heritage from Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his vasi Amirul Momineen Moulana Ali (AS), son-in-law of the Prophet, and continuing through their successors, the Imams, who functioning first from Madinah, spread over to North Africa and Egypt in succeeding centuries.
The Dawoodi Bohras further believe, that so long as the Imam should remain in seclusion, his appointed representative, the Dai al-Mutlaq, conducts on behalf of the Imam his mission (Dawat) and administers and receives from the faithful an oath of allegiance.
The Dawoodi Bohras further believe that the Dai al-Mulaq as the representative and the vicegerent of the Imam on earth in seclusion, enjoys and exercises all the powers and authority of the Imam.

 The Dawoodi Bohra's
Nothing was done, however, about the Nathwani Commission's recommendations and to this day reformist Bohras cannot be married by their priests, cannot have their family members buried in the community's burial grounds and suffer direct and indirect attacks just for questioning the validity of a structure which to them seems an anachronism.
This oath of allegiance to a living human being and the concept of a priestly class marks the Bohras as apart from the rest of Islam.
These are just some of the facts that give a lie to the orthodox Bohra stand that they object to the bank giving interest and have no other ulterior motives.

Islamic Voice - Jamadi Ul Awwal 1422 - News from the Islamic World
Social mobility had dispersed the Bohra community throughout the world and caused the faithful to lose touch with their spiritual touchstone and widespread losses in the matters of orthodoxy.
While Bohra roots in commerce may have helped them in self empowerment on socio-political level, the spiritual leadership of Syedna binds them in a compact entity with time-tested credentials in ensuring solidarity.
Dai’s role is to serve as a bridge between hidden imam and the faithful.

The Imam is in seclusion according to the Bohra belief (in India the Bohras are the followers of the Isma'ili Musta'lian-Tayyabi sect).
Recently the Bohra priest of Sri Lanka tried to unsuccessfully block my entry into Colombo and it was pity to see that the Muslim ministers of Sri Lanka were putting pressure on the governmental machinery not to let me in.
He marginalised the Bohra 'Ulama and concentrated all powers in his hands be they religious or secular.

The Bohra High Priest and his oppressive taxation system
A Bohra has to pay to the high priest even before he is born and continues to pay until after he is dead.
This is unique to the Bohras and is not found in any other Muslim community, nor has it anything to do with the teachings of Islam as such.
He regularly exhorts the Bohras not to insure themselves or their business as the same is haram (prohibited) in Islam.

It is an everyday practise, the bohras believe that if one of them tells the truth about their religion, such as the false quran, he has committed a great sin and will be expelled from their community.
bohras are 'shia' they believe in the Imams (as) up til Imam Jafar as Sadiq (as) but they do not believe in the elder son of Jafas as Sadiq (as) like the ismailis nor do they believe in his younger son, Imam Musa e Kazim (as) like the ithna asheris.

 Dawoodi Bohras - Anjuman-e-Najmi
The Shia Fatimi Ismaili Taiyebi Dawoodi Bohras are a denomination of Islam with a distinct identity, culture and ethos.
In common with all Muslims, we affirm the oneness of Allah, believe that the Prophet Mohammed al-Mustafa (S.A.) was the last prophet in a chain of prophets from Allah and revere the holy Qur'an, as the final revelation of Allah.
It is an article of faith for the Bohras, that whilst the Imam chooses to remain in seclusion his mission is headed by his representative called al-Dai al-Mutlaq, meaning "absolute caller to the faith".

MWU!: Comment on Asghar ‘Ali Engineer's Quest for an Islamic Theology of Peace and Religious Pluralism
Bohra, taken as the sole religious paradigm, is not a form of Islam (for many of the reasons you listed, the chief being the primacy of the priesthood - islam theoretically has no priests, at least not in the hereditary supreme leader sense, something I recall mentioned often in the quran.
Bohras are also considered as Ismailis, as they follow the "Mustaali(an)" interpretation/lineage/line of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.
I think the reason that bohras from the "occasional" group seem to blend in so effectively is that they have effectively separated their muslim faith from bohra orthodoxy.

The Dawoodi Bohras constitute a worldwide religious body which is distinguished as the Shiah Fatimi Ismaili Tayyibi Dawoodi Bohra denomination of Islam.
This ensures the unity of faith among the Dawoodi Bohras all over the world and binds the Community together as one entity preserving its identity.
They practice their religion according to a specific code of beliefs, doctrines and tenets founded on al-Quran and Islamic Shariat as taught and interpreted by the Dai al-Mutlaq.

 Bohras
The word Bohra (also spelled Bohara or Vohra) is derived from the Gujarati vohorvu or vyavahar, meaning "to trade." This has sometimes caused Hindus, Jains, and Muslims of trading communities other than those related to the Tayyibi Ismailis to list themselves on census forms as Bohras.
Pilgrimages to the shrines of the saints are an important part of the devotional life of Bohras, for the facilitation of which resthouses and assisting organizations have been set up.
The Bohras follow the Fatimid school of jurisprudence, which recognizes seven pillars of Islam.

The reporter states that Dawoodi Bohras believe that Mohammed (SAW) was not the actual man in which Allah made the revelation to and infact it was Ali bin Abi Talib (SA) as the actual ‘Holy man’.
The reason being that the Sulaimaniya Bohras also believe in Dawood bin Ajab Shah as al Dai al-Mutlaq and separate from the Dawoodi Bohras after the demise of him.

Interview with Jonah Blank, author of Mullahs on the Mainframe
Many Bohras live in the city of Mumbai (formerly called Bombay) and in their ancestral state of Gujarat, but there are over 470 major communities spread across forty nations.
Even Bohras who shun all other religious observances will often spend the first ten days of the Islamic month of Muharram at their local mosque.
The Bohras differ from almost all other Muslim denominations in their extraordinary degree of spiritual centralization.

H-Net Review: Rehana Ghadially on Mullahs on the Mainframe: Islam and Modernity Among the Daudi ...
Jonah Blank's book on the Daudi Bohra sect of the Ismaili branch of Shi'a Muslims is a welcome addition to the scarce literature on both the Ismaili sect of Shi'ism as opposed to the Ithna-Ashari or Twelver branch of Shi'ism, and on South Asian Muslims compared to Middle Eastern Muslim communities and societies.
The author describes and analyses its critical markers, namely the traditions as embodied in the figure of their spiritual head, da'i-al-mutlaq, and his neo-traditionalist reform program launched in the 1970s which includes elements of cultural revival and a forward movement in the world of technology and Western pedagogy.
The pervasive, central authority of the da'i extending in both religious and temporal matters is unique only to the Bohras and the Agha Khanis (a sister Ismaili sect) on the Indian sub-continent.

Both the Bohras and the Ishmalis originated in India, founded by Hindu converts to Islam.
The Bohras also celebrate holidays not mentioned in the Koran or recognized by other Muslim people groups.
The Ishmalis have stuck close to the teachings of the Koran, while the Bohras chose to interpret the Koran more loosely and hang on to some customs from their Hindu past.

When Muslims are targeted in Gujarat, to claim that Dawoodis are not Muslims is sheer betrayal , The Milli Gazette, ...
Violent attacks on reformist Bohras time and again by fanatic followers of Sayedna and their round and arrogant behaviour with other Muslims, cursing the Muslim Khalifas and creating riots are for any one to judge how peace-loving these followers of Bohra high priest are?
It is unfortunate that their present religious heads have adopted a life of luxury and in order to amass wealth they have imposed several un-Islamic taxes and practices on the followers.
In fact any one who follows the basic principles of Islam and believes in Allah, His book the Qur’an and the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is a Muslim.

Amazon.com: Books: Mullahs on the Mainframe: Islam and Modernity Among the Daudi Bohras
What the Bohras have done, Blank concludes, is to "break down the false dichotomy between modernity and tradition, to let members of the community revel in both." This brilliant study is both academically rigorous and a welcome introduction to the real success of this Islamic community in the modern world.
This is a groundbreaking work for two reasons: it is the first full description of a community never before studied from outside, and it demonstrates that an orthodox Islamic community can also embrace Western ideas and technology by adopting all aspects of modern culture that are not forbidden to it.
Combining orthodox Muslim prayer, dress, and practice with secular education, relative gender equality, and Internet use, this community serves as a surprising reminder that the central values of "modernity" are hardly limited to the West.

Mullahs on the Mainframe -- Islam and Modernity among the Daudi Bohras -- Jonah Blank
The Bohras uphold orthodox Muslim practices as faithfully as any Wahhabi pietist could wish: in all matters of prayer, dress, and even avoidance of financial interest, they are highly conservative.
As the first outsider to gain entry to the Daudi Bohra community (a unique Shia denomination numbering one million, concentrated in South Asia but spread throughout the world), Blank provides a firsthand account of a society that sees no contradiction between Islamic tradition and full-fledged modernity.
At the same time, they eagerly adopt any aspects of modern culture not in direct conflict with their core beliefs.

 Bohras need democracy: reformist
The Bohra community needs to be more democratic, according to Dr Asgar Ali Engineer, general secretary of Central Board of Dawoodi Bohra Community, an independent body which heads the reform movement in the community.

He added, ‘‘The Syedna imposes worst kind of socio-religious authoritarianism and hence there is no question of their accepting doctrine of accountability.

The Daudi Bohras,   named after their 27th Dai, Syedna Daud ibn Qutubshah (AD.1612), now pay allegiance to the leadership of His  Holiness, Dr. Syedna Muhammad Burhanuddin (TUS), the 52nd Dai.

In 1984, for the first time in the history of the community world-wide, His Holiness observed the Ashara Mubarakah (rites commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) the grandson of Prophet Muhammad [SAW]) in East Africa and the city that was bestowed this honour was Nairobi.
With the guidance, permission and blessings of the Dai al-Mutlaq, the members of the Dawoodi Bohra community first came to Kenya towards the end of the 19th century, principally to engage in trade and business.
The same year the famed Mirasul Barakaat conference was held in Mombasa at which the landmark five-point guidance was bestowed on the Dawoodi Bohras of the whole world.

1780.—“Among the rest was the whole of the property of a certain Muhammad Mokrim, a man of the Bohra tribe, the Chief of all the merchants, and the owner of three or four merchant ships.”— H.
They are essentially peasants, sturdy, thrifty, and excellent cultivators, retaining much of Hindu habit; and are, though they have dropped caste distinctions, very exclusive and “denominational” (as the Bombay Gazetteer expresses it).
Some things indicate that the Shi& Bohras may be, in accordance with their tradition, in some considerable part of foreign descent, and that the Sunni Bohras, who are unquestionably of Hindu descent, may have been native converts of the foreign immigrants, afterwards forcibly brought over to Sunnism by the Guzerat Sultans.
