Kuan Yin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kuan Yin (觀音; Pinyin: Guān Yīn) is the female manifestation of the bodhisattva of compassion as venerated by East Asian Buddhists.
Because this bodhisattva is considered the personification of compassion and kindness, a mother-goddess and patron of mothers and seamen, the representation in China was further interpreted in an all female form around the 12th century.
The crown usually depicts the image of Amitabha Buddha, Kuan Yin's spiritual teacher before she became a Bodhisattva.

 Bodhisattva Ideal in Mahayana
The greatest of Bodhisattvas are fully attained beings -- that is, they have reached a state where they could extinguish their own individual existence in Nirvana -- but they have vowed to remain in the midst of Samsara to help other beings reach enlightenment.
Perhaps most important are that most of these practices were present alongside monastic practice in early Indian Buddhism, and that Buddhism as preached by its founder is expansive enough to accommodate a wide range of practices, such as the reverence for celestial beings.
This is an especially important characteristic of Celestial Bodhisattvas, such as Manjushri or Avalokiteshvara (Guan-Yin), whose spiritual powers are so great that they are, in effect, gods.

While most of the uses of the term "bodhisattva" concern Gotama Buddha and the numerous buddhas who preceded him, there are also references in the Paali canon to the possibility of future buddhas (and hence bodhisattvas).

This is quite in keeping with the Theravada tradition which, too, holds that one may become a Bodhisattva and attain the state of a fully Enlightened Buddha; but if one cannot, one may attain the state of a Pratyekabuddha or of a Sravaka according to one's capacity.
From this we can see that anyone who aspires to become a Buddha is a Bodhisattva, a Mahayanist, though he may live in a country or in a community popularly and traditionally regarded as Theravada or Hinayana.
Similarly, a person who aspires to attain Nirvana as a disciple is a Sravakayanika or Hinayanist though he may belong to a country or a community considered as Mahayana.
