 Encyclopedia: Church in Wales
Unlike bishops in the Church of England, each bishop of the Church in Wales is elected by an 'Electoral College' which consists of representatives of the diocese seeking a new bishop, representatives of the other five dioceses in Wales and all the other Bishops of the Church in Wales.
The Archbishop of Wales, the head of the Church in Wales, is elected from the six diocesan bishops and continues as a diocesan bishop after his election.
A bishop is an ordained member of the Christian clergy who holds a specific position of authority in any of a number of Christian churches.

 EBK: Geoffrey of Monmouth (110-1155)
Monmouth: Vicar and Parochial Church Council of Monmouth.
As with all his works, Geoffrey hoped the prophecies might bring him a lucrative preferment in the Church, and he used its dedication to ingratiate himself with Alexander who was Bishop of his local diocese.
Some say, erroneously, that his tutor was an uncle named Uchtryd who made him Archdeacon of Llandeilo or Llandaff when he became Bishop of the latter in around 1140.

wfn.org Plenary raises challenges of making moral decisions
A clash of faiths Mano Rumalshah, Bishop of Peshawar in the Church of Pakistan, the sessions's first presenter, spoke of deadly dangers that daily face Christians in regions where Islamic teaching is law.
Isn't this also in keeping with the call, 'take up your cross and follow me?'" Bishop Rumalshah told of a 15-year-old Christian schoolgirl who was accused of insulting the holy prophet of Islam in her classroom.
The session, with its mix of strong illustrations followed by thoughtful reflection by Bishop Rowan Williams of Monmouth (Wales), sought to "find a way forward for the leaders of the Church," said plenary coordinator Bishop Victoria Matthews of Edmonton (Canada).

Tivy Side October 26th 1926NEWCASTLE EMLYN CHURCHRE-
The Bishop after signing the instrument, directed that it be preserved among the muniments of the diocese, and pronounced the Church consecrated in the name of the Holy Trinity.
The Bishop receiving the instrument of conveyance laid the document on the Communion table, and turning to the congregation invoked the blessing of the Almighty upon the undertaking.
The Lord Bishop took his text from the 11th chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews, the 30th verse - "By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days." The address was mainly in English, but the first portion was given in Welsh.

 Articles - Rowan Williams
In 1991 he was elected Bishop of Monmouth, and in 1999 he was made Archbishop of Wales.
On the other hand some evangelical Anglicans were troubled by his opinions on the ordination of women as bishops and on homosexuality, and some also regarded as unorthodox his views on central doctrinal issues such as revelation, sin and salvation.
In 2002 he was announced as the successor to George Carey as Archbishop of Canterbury in the Church of England and, therefore, leader of the Anglican Communion, even though technically he was not even a member of the Church of England, but the (non-established) Church in Wales.

The flying bishops are supposed to represent the Catholic clergy but not one of them is single, nor is the Bishop of Fulham.
I do not know what Bishop Kallistos was referring to when he quotes the words of a priest, “Syria and Lebanon form a dark picture among Orthodox countries” (quoted by Saward, but left out of the 1993 edition).
The catholic part of the C of E may not be getting many of their number raised to the episcopate but when it comes to the single or celibate priests there are none at all.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Geoffrey of Monmouth
In 1151-2 he was elected bishop of St. Asaph and was consecrated at Lambeth by Theobald Archbishop of Canterbury, on 24 Feb., having been ordained priest a week before, but he died without having entered his diocese.
He was the son of Arthur, a priest, and was educated by his uncle Uchtryd, afterwards Bishop of Llandaff.
It has been surmised that he became a Benedictine monk, but this is uncertain.

Bishop Walker was speaking after three Africans, two women and a man, were found guilty of torturing an eight-year-old girl in London because they believed that she was a witch.
THE PRACTICE of exorcism in some African churches in Britain is becoming an increasing concern, particularly when it involves children, warned the Bishops' spokesman on deliverance ministry, the Bishop of Monmouth, the Rt Revd Dominic Walker OGS, this week.
o Exorcism of a person should be carried out only by a person authorised by the diocesan bishop.

 The VOICE - October 1998
We have far too few bishops with his kind of intellectual grasp available to lead this Church of ours.
It does need to be noted that his attacking article appeared at the opening of the Lambeth Conference and that when this Conference passed its hostile and rejecting resolution about gay people, I was told that there were only two English or Welsh bishops who voted against it.
I have not known Rowan well but I have known him pleasantly.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: William of Turbeville
As bishop he left nothing undone to spread the cult of the "boy-martyr" William.
On four different occasions he had the boy's remains transferred to more honourable places, and in 1168 even erected a chapel in his honor in Mousehold Wood, where the boy's body was said to have been found.
Here he also made religious profession, became teacher and later prior.

 Bishop Letter
The pride of the large Welsh contingent that our former archbishop is now the chief bishop of the worldwide Anglican Communion, the magnificent surroundings, the dignified ceremonial, the presence of such a huge crowd of people and the superb music all combined to make it a memorable event.
I hope we will all remember him in our prayers not just on that important day but through all the months and years ahead.
This is my first opportunity to express publicly my good wishes to the Right Reverend Dominic Walker, OGS, at present Bishop of Reading, on his election to be Bishop of Monmouth.

 Geoffrey of Monmouth
Whether or not Geoffrey moved back to Wales after being consecrated Bishop of St. Asaph's (February 16, 1152) is a matter of some debate; most likely he did not.
The wondrous and strange Prophetiae Merlini (Prophecies of Merlin, hereafter denoted as PM), composed with the encouragement of Alexander, bishop of Lincoln, whose literary patronage Geoffrey tried to procure, was certainly circulating by 1135.
For a newly-ordained Anglo-Norman bishop to move to a newly-established see in the midst of the territory where Owain Gwynedd was leading a revolt against Henry II would have been extremely unwise.

I want you to know that on the day of David's inhibition over six months ago I sent to all ECUSA bishops the Standing Committee document outlining David's canonical infractions that I also just sent to you -- and that, while none elected to do so, every ECUSA bishop had six months to respond.
Moreover, on four occasions this past summer I sought to obtain from the ACC Office in London permission to mail to all Anglican Communion bishops a letter summarizing the situation, but never heard back any definitive response to my request.
I would respectfully ask that you expect as much of David in regard to his own province as you would were he your priest.

GO BRITANNIA! Wales: Sacred Places - Llandaff (Thlan daff) Cathedral
Teilo built his church where a small Christian community, founded by Dyfrig, existed a generation earlier.
The three saints connected with the church's early foundation, Teilo (Tielow), Dyfrig (Duvrigg) and Euddogwy (Eye-thog-wee) are commemorated by the three bishops' mitres on the coat of Arms of the diocese of Llandaff.
When Dyfrig's bones, which were brought here by Bishop Urban after being exhumed from Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli: Uniss Enthllee), were washed by the monks, the water bubbled as if a red-hot stone had been thrown into it.

I regret not having been able to include a Welsh hymn, as I think Glân geriwbiaid would have raised the roof at Canterbury, but the ultimate choice was easy: the Enthronement was taking place on the Feast Day of George Herbert (a lovely coincidence, as Archbishop Rowan is, of course,

Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly . INTERVIEW . Bishop Frank Griswold . February 21, 2003 PBS
Episcopalians here can think a number of things about issues and doctrines, whereas in northern Nigeria, for example, the church has to be absolutely of one mind if it is going to hold its own against a very resolute Islam.
I've known Rowan since about the beginning of the '90s, when he was Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at Oxford University, and he is first of all a scholar.
When bishops from northern Nigeria meet bishops from the United States, there is a discrepancy that is rooted and grounded in the difference of our two contexts.

Geoffrey Of Monmouth --  Encyclopædia Britannica
In his Historia regum Britanniae, Geoffrey of Monmouth “invented history” by drawing on classical authors, the Bible, and Celtic tradition to create the story of a British kingdom, to some extent...
According to Geoffrey of Monmouth's 12th-century History of the Kings of Britain, Cymbeline (or Cunobelinus) was a British monarch of the 1st century AD who was raised in Rome as a Roman.
In three passages of the Historia Geoffrey describes himself as “Galfridus Monemutensis,” an indication that he probably came from Monmouth.
