There is also a Bhimashankar temple at Bhimapur hill near Guwahati in Assam where legend holds that a demon by name Bhima who inflicted havoc upon the beings in the area, was slain by Shiva, as he tried to kill a king enaged in Shiva worship.
It is home to an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the twelve esteemed Jyotirlinga shrines and is associated with Shiva destroying the demon Tripurasura.
The Shiva Purana and the Koti Rudra Samhita refer to Bhimashankar temple in the Kamarupa country.

Initially, we planned to cover only the first plateau and a hike through the forests, since trekking up to Bhimashankar and back on the same day could be a daunting task.

You might consider adding 20kms to your ride by turning towards Bhimashankar from Manchar - this is the route I returned by and its much better laid.
from pune you drive along the nashik road till rajgurunagar (about 35 kms from pune) from here you take get off the nashik road on to narrower raods that lead up to bhimashankar.

We just made it in time when it was getting dark, to discover that five of the guys with us who were actually ahead of us were missing.

Its mentioned in many newspapers that bhimashankar is a good place to trek but they dont mention the risks involved.
In the evening we attended the aarti in the temple, next morning we didnt get time to explore bhimashankar as we had to go(probably we missed the best part !
So if u really wanna go there forget the trek take the road from pune...n enjoy.

As far as food is concerned, there's not much to choose in terms of variety.
But you will get good wholesome Maharashtrian thalis (only vegetarian please, we are pilgrims) at very reasonable rates at the MTDC-run canteen as well as in the numerous hotels that line the main (and only) road in Bhimashankar.
For breakfast, you can get some splendid kandapoha (cooked puffed rice with onions) at throwaway rates.
