Topic: Bhikshu

Dharma Realm Buddhist Association - Dharma
Bhikshu is a Sanskrit word; it is the technical designation for a fully ordained Buddhist monk, one who leads a pure and celibate life and who upholds the basic 250 monastic regulations (227 in the Theravada tradition).
Above, a Bhikshu seeks the food of Dharma from all the Buddhas to nourish his Dharma body.
"Bhikshu has three meanings, and so it is not translated from Sanskrit.

 Dhammapada
The Bhikshu who acts with kindness, who is calm in the doctrine of Buddha, will reach the quiet place (Nirvana), cessation of natural desires, and happiness.
The Bhikshu, full of delight, who is calm in the doctrine of Buddha will reach the quiet place (Nirvana), cessation of natural desires, and happiness.
The Bhikshu who controls his mouth, who speaks wisely and calmly, who teaches the meaning and the law, his word is sweet.

Role of Theravada in the  preservation
Bhikshu Aamritananda first took the lead in brod casting the Buddhist programme on the occasion of Swanyapunhi from Radio Calcutta.
This initiative was followed by the establishment of All Nepal Bhikshu Mahasangha, Mahayana Sangha, Youths’ Buddhist Mandala, Youths’ Buddhist Organisation, Women’s Buddhists Organisation, Taremana Sangha, Buddhist Vihar Sangha, etc. The Himalayan Buddhist Training Institute is likely to publish Nepal Buddhist Directory in near future.
The unforgettable moments in the history of Buddhism in Nepal were the Dharma Deshana (religious discourses) given by Ven.

 THE RUHUNU DHARMA YATHRA
It is encouraging to note that the Ruhunu Rata Bhikshu Peramuna and the Ruhunu Jathika Ekabaddha Peramuna have come forward to agitate for a Buddhist state in this country in spite of many hindrances.
As far as the Ruhunu Rata Bhikshu Peramuna and the Ruhunu Jathika Ekabaddha Peramuna are concerned independence can be achieved only in a Buddhist state.
A person who campaigns for a Buddhist state may be branded as a fundamentalist in addition to being called a "jathivadiya".

The Bhikshu with the Fragrant Breath
In the past, during the time of Kaashyapa Buddha's Dharma I was a Dharma-proclaiming bhikshu who, in the midst of the great assembly, constantly took pleasure in expounding on the immeasurable qualities of Kaashyapa, the World Honored One, on the reality mark of all dharmas, and on an incalculable number of methods to access Dharma.
Although he had not yet achieved the stage of "seeing the Way", still, he did maintain a minor degree of faith and bliss in the Dharma of the Buddha.
At that time the bhikshu replied in verse, saying:

The Present Status of the Bhikshuni Ordination
Women are to receive bhikshuni ordination from a community of at least ten bhikshunis, and, at a separate ceremony later the same day, from a community of at least ten bhikshus (fully ordained monks).
The bhikshuni ordination lineage is important, for one becomes a nun by taking the ordination from those who have received it, and in this way, the purity of the transmission is traced back to the Buddha himself.
In 1997, eight women from Sri Lanka received the bhikshuni ordination from a Korean sangha in India, and in 1998, twenty women from Sri Lanka received it in Bodhgaya, India, from Chinese bhikshunis and bhikshus.

 Chapter Twenty
When this Bhikshu's life was coming to an end, when he was about to die, in empty space he heard all of the complete twenty thousand myriad kotis of verses of the Dharma Flower Sutra previously spoken by the Buddha King of Awesome Sound.
At that time, because the Buddha dharma was about to become extinct, the Bhikshus, Bhikshunis, Upasakas, and Upasikas were all attached to the superficial aspects of the Dharma.
The Bodhisattva Never-Slighting / would approach them-the Bhikshus of overweening pride-and say to them, / "I will not slight you, / for you are practicing the Way, the Bodhisattva Path, and shall become Buddhas." In the future you will all become Buddhas.

'Then again, O Ananda, this Bhikshu Dharmakara having recited these peculiar prayers before the Bhagavat Lokesvararaja, the Tathagata, and before the world including gods, Mara, and Brahman, and before people consisting of Sramanas and Brahmanas with gods, men, and Asuras, was established in the attainment of the true promise.
And again during the time of the preaching of this holy and fully enlightened Tathagata Lokesvararaja, O Ananda, there was a Bhikshu, Dharmakara by name, richly endowed with memory, with understanding, prudence, and wisdom,--richly endowed with vigour, and of noble character.
And that Bhagavat Amitabha, the Tathagata, holy and fully enlightened, overshadowing that mass of Sravakas and that mass of Bodhisattvas, is seen, illuminating all quarters.

Generally speaking, those Buddhist practitioners who are really determined to follow this practice according to the Buddha's guidance of course become sramanera(ika), then bhikshu(ni).
The teachings of the bodhisattva vehicle and tantric vehicle, for example Kalachakra, express great appreciation for the bhikshu vow.
Then they take the bodhisattva vow and finally the tantric vow.

 DAILY BRUIN ONLINE
During the holy month of Ramadan, a little over a billion Muslims around the world practice their faith by fasting and praying from sunrise to sunset to show their devotion to God.
"Renunciation is the practice, and simplicity is the result," said Kusala Bhikshu, a monk from the International Buddhist Meditation Center in Los Angeles.
To lead a good Buddhist life, Bhikshu told a handful of students gathered at the University Catholic Center on Gayley Avenue, one should begin by giving up — giving up killing, lying and stealing to find peace and tranquility in life.

Indeed, the British monk, Bhikshu Sangharakshita says “that it would scarcely be an exaggeration to claim that an understanding of this protean word is synonymous with an understanding of Buddhism”.
In fact, the Buddha called his teaching the “Dharma”, and along with buddha and sangha, dharma is one of the Three Jewels of Buddhism—the essence of Buddhist practice and teaching.
