 Introduction - Lava-Kusha
After the Valmiki Ramayana was written, many other versions like the 'Ananda Ramayana, 'Adbhuta Ramayana, Vasishta Ramayana' and 'Sesha Ramayana' also came to be written.
The rest of the story, not narrated by Valmiki, is given in Sesha Ramayana.
Lava and Kusha tied the horse and successfully fought Bharata, Shatrughna, Lakshmana and finally Rama himself.

 Ramayana: Lava and Kusha's Challenge
Bharata said, "Are you not the same boys who were singing Ramayana there in the yajnashala?" They said, "Yes, we are the same boys, and we know that you worship shoes.
Lava said, "By looking at you, I can see that you are Satrughna."
They were acting as if they didn't hear him or see him.

The Hindu : The songs echo the Epic
To quote the Ramayana again, Sri Rama was seated on the throne with his brothers near Him and Sri Rama tells Lakshmana, Satruguna and Bharata
LIKE THE Ramayana, the compositions of Sri Thyagaraja have given us spiritual guidance.
If the recital of Kusa and Lava thrilled the minds, Sri Thyagaraja, addressing Sri Rama as ``Naada-Brahmaananda-roopa'' in the Mukhari song records his ecstasy as the rishis hearing Kusa Lava bringing lavished praise on them.

Musical Nirvana - Introduction to Indian Classical Music
Bharatha's Natya Shastra (200 BC-200 A.D) The first available sanskrit text, dealing entirely with stagecraft (including dance and music) is NatyaShastra, the original portions of the revered treatise were written by Bharata Muni (sage).
But it is believed to precede Valmiki Ramayana by scholars, as it is evident from the oldest portions like the Sunder and Yuddha Kandas that Valmiki was using Bharat Muni's terminology with a musicological awareness.
The term Raaga is first found in Natya Shastra, meaning not scale but tonal color - as the colour that fills the heart and mind of man. Natyasastra makes several references to the seven notes, saptasvaras, naming them by the same names used even today (shadja, vrishabha etc).
