Topic: Berith

 [No title]
This understanding of the meaning of berith is confirmed by the extra-biblical evidence of analogous phenomena in the ancient world, particularly certain political arrangements whose formal equivalence to the divine covenants in the Bible is established by striking and extensive parallels in their ratificatory rituals and documents and in their administrative procedures.
In view of these secondary uses of berith and because of the long and firmly established place of the word “covenant” in English versions of the Bible and in theological formulations it would seem expedient to continue to make use of “covenant” in translating berith and diatheke.
The berith arrangement is no mere secular contract but rather belongs to the sacred sphere of divine witness and enforcement.

 Pooh's Think - Volume 17, Issue 2
Berith is repugnant to the `garden': `Covenant' is a defining element of life in the garden before the fall.
Berith is one of the few dissimilarities between the beginning of the world of Adam and the world of Noah.
Berith (`covenant') was a word that came down from heaven to comfort and cheer those men whom the Lord had already loved, those who were already righteous in His eyes (e.g., Noah and Abraham).

Covenant, in the Old Testament - International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
It is probable that the word is the same as the Assyrian biritu, which has the common meaning "fetter," but also means "covenant." The significance of the root from which this Assyrian word is derived is uncertain.
In all cases of covenants between men, except Jeremiah 34:10 and Daniel 9:27, the technical phrase for making a covenant is karath berith, in which karath meant originally "to cut." Everything indicates that this verb is used with reference to the formal ceremony of ratification above mentioned, of cutting animals in pieces.
The etymological force of the Hebrew berith is not entirely certain.

 Diatheke - Covenant or Testament?
For Luther the berith of the Old Testament was, in essence, the Gospel-promise of Jesus Christ, while the diatheke was the Gospel-promise completed in the Christ who was already born, sacrificed, risen, and who was coming again to give His people the ultimate inheritance: forgiveness of sins in heaven.
Possibly the easiest of all would be to translate berith or "covenant" as "promise" and diatheke and its completed "testament" concept as "fulfilled promise." But this would also be unacceptable since the original idioms would be lost.
Those who favor "covenant" for diatheke see berith and diatheke as one-sided promises (suzerainty covenants) wherein God the Suzerain makes the promises and keeps all of them in Christ His Son.

What Is A Covenant? John Thomas compared with JJ Andrew
It may be proper to remark here that a berith, or covenant, is expressed in Greek by diatheke.
In English, covenant signifies ‘a mutual agreement of two or more persons to do or forbear some act or thing.’ This, however, is not the sense of the word berith when used in relation to the things of the kingdom.
It is a covenant whether they consent or not, and is enforced as the imperious enactment of an absolute king.
