Bengalib> language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bengalis (then East Pakistanis) were initially agitated by a decision by the central Pakistani government to establish Urdu as the sole national language for all of Pakistan, despite the fact that Bangla was spoken by the majority of the population.
Bengalib> is the English word for the name of the language and for its speakers; in Bengalib>, the language itself is called Bangla (pronounced: IPA: /'baŋla/), a term that now has greater currency in English.
Many of the reformist religious, philosophical, and political movements that began in that era were led by Bengalis.

Info on Assamese Language
The opinion that the present language of Bengalib> is the parent of Assamese is reconcocilable with facts...In fact the Assamese pronunciation of words derived from Sanskrit is such as to render the supposition of a Bengalib> origin entirely admissible.
He wrote in the introduction to the "Grammatical Notes on the Assamese Language" published in 1846: "The Assamese is often regarded as merely a corrupt form of the Bengalib>, by persons who become acquainted with the language previous to their arrival in Assam.
For example, he compares Assamese and Bengalib> regarding how genetive (possessive) case, locative case, past conditional forms of verbs (`heten'), infinitive forms of verbs, etc., and show that the two languages are so different that Assamese could not have been derived from Bengalib>.
