Disciple whom Jesus loved - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The gospel writer indicates (in John 20:24) that the Beloved Disciple is testifying to the accounts told in John's gospel.
Thus, the Beloved Disciple is meant to be Jesus' boyfriend.
An issue in the identification of the Beloved Disciple with John is whether the apostle is the same man as John the Evangelist.

 The Beloved Disciple (Eller) 3
The Galilean Twelve of the Synoptics and the Beloved Disciple of the Fourth Gospel
Indeed, the Synoptic evidence points to the conclusion that John-Z became Jesus' disciple on the Galilean seashore and that, therefore, the follower of the Baptist who earlier, down south, had become Jesus' disciple, subsequently to be known as "the disciple whom Jesus loved "--he must have been someone else.
The explanation (I propose) is that the man behind this Gospel (the Beloved Disciple, of course) had in fact been a disciple of John the Baptist and knew that this background of his was common knowledge.

magdalene.org -- "Mary Magdalene: Author of the Fourth Gospel?" by Ramon K. Jusino, M.A.
He says that the disciple is not referred to as the beloved simply because he is not yet a disciple of Jesus at this point in the story (Brown 1979: 33).
It is further posited that she was the Beloved Disciple of the Fourth Gospel and, therefore, the founder and leader of what has come to be known as the Johannine Community.
Setzer (259) asserts that the prominent role of female disciples was an early and firmly entrenched piece of tradition which quickly became an embarrassment to the male leaders of the emerging institutional church.

 Beloved Disciple
Throughout the Gospel of John, the Beloved Disciple has only one role, she says, and that is "to embody" (to exemplify) "the love and intimacy with Jesus that is the goal of discipleship in John." The intimacy of Jesus with the Father, is mirrored in the emotional closeness of the Beloved Disciple with Jesus.
Imagine us, together, as Beloved Disciples- chosen by God, blessed by God, broken in the act of being human, and given in acts of selfless love, as Christ gave his very life for us.
The Beloved wins the race, sees that the tomb of Jesus is empty, and believes--believes that the empty tomb bears evidence that Jesus has conquered death.

 Ae1 Year A, Easter 1, Commentary, John 20:1-18, NT
This is the disciple that was known to the high priest and after Jesus&; arrest he follows Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest (18:15).
The Beloved Disciple is more cautious, but once he enters the tomb and sees the undisturbed grave clothes, his perceptiveness leads to faith in the resurrection.
However, the statement that the Beloved Disciple, "who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed" in verse 8 is most significant for the Gospel writer.

‘Because of the Woman’s Testimony...’: A Review of Sandra M. Schneiders’ Article on the Authorship of the Fourth ...
The Disciple is a contrived figure that possesses all of the admirable traits of the historical figures from which the Beloved Disciple is derived.
The Gnostic portrayal of Mary Magdalene as the Beloved Disciple is a major part of my arguments for identifying her, and her alone, as the Beloved Disciple in the Fourth Gospel.
Schneiders suggests that the Beloved Disciple is a textual paradigm derived from several characters in the Fourth Gospel.

Vision of the Beloved Disciple, The: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John by George T. Montague, S.M.
Montague's approach is to view Jesus from the perspective of the "Beloved Disciple," who he presumes is the key source for this Gospel's unique presentation of Jesus.
Imagine being able to sit at the feet of the Beloved Disciple and to learn from him all that he had come to understand about the mystery of Jesus, having lived so closely with the Lord during his life and having pondered the wonder of it all for many years after.

The Problem of the Fourth Gospel: Excursus 2
Its author is boldly identified with the Beloved Disciple and the Beloved Disciple with the son of Zebedee.
The conjecture is not far-fetched that the Beloved Disciple is a dweller in or near Jerusalem.
Looking to the manner of the Johannine representation—'one of his disciples,' 'the disciple,' 'the other disciple,' 'that disciple'—the inference is not exactly far-fetched that some third person is throughout responsible for the designation.

The Galilean Twelve of the Synoptics and the Beloved Disciple of the Fourth Gospel
It is "the disciple whom Jesus loved," whom we hereafter will refer to as "the Beloved Disciple." And it is this person who now is to be the subject of our study as we set out to discover his name, his story, and his thought.
As fate (or whoever) would have it, I had written a book on the Beloved Disciple's identity, personal history, and theological thought without once knowing what I was doing.

The Apostle John was not the beloved disciple that Jesus loved
The idea that “the disciple whom Jesus loved” had to be one of “the twelve” has several problems, but the key thing to realize is that this idea isn’t dictated by scripture.
John 18:15 goes on to say, “that disciple was known unto the high priest”.
Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter“.

Was John the beloved disciple who Jesus Loved? The Bible says…
Conversely, “the disciple whom Jesus loved” is conspicuous by his absence (from the other three Gospels).
Therefore, the Bible suggests that this “disciple” was with Jesus for the period of time that is covered between John 18:15 and John 19:27.
Moreover, “the disciple whom Jesus loved” is not the most humble-sounding self-description.

Free Bible study, who was the beloved disciple whom Jesus loved
The label “the disciple whom Jesus loved” implies Jesus had a relationship with this disciple that was notably different from the relationships that he had with the rest of his disciples.
Something about this “other disciple” caused some or all of the disciples that were present at this event to jump to their erroneous conclusion – that Jesus’ words, “If I will that he tarry till I come” meant “that disciple should not die” (Jn.
While it isn’t clear precisely what made one a “disciple”, to contend that Lazarus wasn’t a “disciple” merely because the Bible doesn’t label him as such is unreasonable in light of what we know about his appearances in the Bible.

Did Leonardo da Vinci believe that Mary Magdalene was the Beloved Disciple?
In my article, I discuss my hypothesis that Mary Magdalene was probably the Beloved Disciple and, therefore, the true author of the Fourth Gospel (the Gospel of John).
But, if Leonardo intentionally made the Beloved Disciple seem ambiguously female, and formed the letter M as described, then this may show that Leonardo believed that Mary Magdalene was, indeed, the Beloved Disciple of the Fourth Gospel.
Whether the disciple appears to be female is, of course, a very subjective call.

 Pietisten: The Beloved Disciple
The role of the Beloved Disciple is as the son of Jesus’ mother.
In this portrayal of the Beloved Disciple set within the commentary of the Gospel and especially the farewell discourses, the Gospel writer, I think, may be inviting his readers to share in that friendship and its rich qualities of loyalty, love and insight.
In the text on the last supper the Beloved Disciple is introduced as "one of the disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—reclining next to Jesus." And then, as we have noted, he is the one through whom Peter had to go in order to learn some undisclosed information.

 Commentary
Before considering the possibility of a woman being the author or the Beloved Disciple, it is worthwhile first to consider what early writers said on the identity of the Beloved Disciple and the author of the Fourth Gospel.
Whether or not the assertion is correct that a woman was the Beloved Disciple and/or the author of the Fourth Gospel, the authentic history of the 1st century Christian communities makes clear that women had very active leadership roles in some churches.

The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved - who was that beloved disciple?
The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved uses the example of the Bereans who "searched the scriptures daily to see if it is so" and treats the facts in the Biblical record as testimony.
The beloved disciple did not label his book The Gospel of John.
A new book called The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved takes a closer look at this "other disciple" and the special role that he played in the life of Jesus.

 The Contemporary Catholic Church
The Beloved Disciple Seminary places high emphasis on the actual process of formation for ministry, rather than simple helping you to obtain extensive "book knowledge." We want to help you form your attitudes toward pastoral ministry, which is essentially the role of the priest "being present" with someone and assisting them on their spiritual journey.
It is the role of the seminary to help strengthen your spiritual life and deepen your relationship with God and with Christ's Church.
The Contemporary Catholic Church and the Beloved Disciple Seminary place prime importance on the power of prayer and encourage all seminarians to explore this gift to its fullest.

Regardless of the whether material in the Gospel was added early or late in the process of composition, it all derived from the witness of the Beloved Disciple as his teachings were developed and used in the worship of the community that gathered around him.
Although this disciple is traditionally identified as the apostle John, the Gospel itself does not make this identification.
The Gospel itself says only that it was written by the beloved disciple (21:20-24).

The fourth gospel is believed to have been written after the three gospels known as the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) and unlike the synoptic gospels which share similar backgrounds and sources, John's Gospel takes a completely different direction.

The strongest parts of The Beloved Disciple are Beth's observations on John's relationship with Jesus and with the other disciples.
John alone, she reminds readers, stayed near to watch Jesus crucified, and tradition asserts that he also received the honor of penning the last book of the Bible, the book of Revelation.

He is variously called John the Evangelist, John the Divine, and the Beloved Disciple.
John has been thought to have been the disciple “whom Jesus loved.” Jesus, in his dying moments, committed Mary to John's care.
The two brothers, together with Peter, were the three apostles closest to Jesus; they witnessed the Transfiguration and accompanied Jesus to Gethsemane.

Did Perugino (1445-1523) leave us a clue about the identity of Mary Magdalene as the Beloved Disciple?
Of great importance here is that the Fourth Gospel is the only one of the New Testament Gospels that places either the mother of Jesus or the "Beloved Disciple" (traditionally believed to be St. John) at the foot of the Cross.
However, this does show that Perugino, daVinci, and others had reason to believe that Mary Magdalene was the Beloved Disciple of the Fourth Gospel.
It is as if he is intentionally drawing our attention to both of these figures as a clue to the identity of the Beloved Disciple.

The Secret of the Beloved Disciple by James F. Twyman

Though I am a priest, I have always known that I am also part of the ‘Order of the Beloved Disciple.’; I am, in the strictest sense of the word, a heretic in my own church.
"Now you’ll recall that John is referred to as ‘the Beloved Disciple.’; This related to the deep mystical bond between Jesus and John, and that is the clue we are looking for.

 The Beloved Disciple Descriptive Information
The Gospel of John refers several times to "the disciple Jesus loved." Many modern scripture scholars now agree with ancient sources that the Apostle John wrote this Gospel (or dictated most of the information) and was indirectly talking about himself.
The partial anonymity of the Beloved Disciple invites us to place ourselves in this scene, becoming beloved disciples as well.
Patient meditation on the details of the loving interaction presented to us in this beautiful icon can be a very rewarding prayer experience.

It is important to reflect on an important truth regarding Christ's kingship; it is one primarily of obedience to Him, and to His laws, as taught by the Catholic Church down through the ages.
This command was given to propagate Christ's three offices as redeemer: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations (prophetic office), baptizing them (priestly office) … teaching them to observe all that I have commanded (kingly office)...”
