The river is considered sacred in Hinduism - the term Hindu itself is derived from Sindhu - and is worshipped by Hindus.
On the northern course of the river in Kashmir live the Buddhist people of Ladakh, of Tibetan stock, with Kashmiris who practise both Islam and Hinduism.

All along the river there were many ashrams where different gurus were teaching and people meditating.
At sunset I took part in Aarti ceremony and floated flowers and incense in little leafboats down the river listening to chanting and drumming and looking at the priests from nearby temples waving fire sticks in devotion to the gods Shiva, Laksmi, Ganesha, Saraswati, Vishnu etc. All mornings more flowers were floating down the river.
In the afternoon my autoriksha driver wanted to introduce his English teacher from 'Divine Language School' to me. I was taken in front of the English class of young women and men of Rishikesh and asked to tell them about Australia and Finland and encourage them in their language studies.
