Banaras The Eternal City - Features - Magazine
Banaras was also celebrated as the place where the most profound wisdom dwelt, the seat of all enlightenment and learning.
The allure of Banaras is great, for the Hindu who dies here attains moksha or liberation.
Holiest of cities to Hindus and earthly abode of Lord Shiva, Banaras is a beacon for pilgrims who come to bathe in the sacred Ganga river.

Banaras: The Luminous City - Exhibitions - Arts & Culture - Asia Society
Banaras is also considered the earthly home of Lord Shiva - one of the three main deities of the Hindu trinity - and is dotted with many temples and shrines dedicated to this divinity.
The second part, called "The Crossing: Living, Dying and Transformation in Banaras," is a multi-media presentation employing different forms of interactive technology as an exploration of this complex spiritual and social site.
The objects are housed in interactive installations evoking the rituals and spiritual purification undergone by pilgrims as they visit this sacred city.

In the imagination of the people of Banaras, Shiva is visualised as an ash-smeared yogi who is meditating in the cremation grounds and eternally bestowing grace and liberation on his devotees.
Mecca, is one of the world's most celebrated pilgrimage sites, and has been acknowledged as a center of learning for over 2000 years.
Besides the religious significance, Banaras is the home

 Sacred Sites:
A favored hermitage site for many of India's most adored sages - Guatama Buddha and Mahavira, Kabir and Tulsi Das, Shankaracharaya, Ramanuja and Patanjali - Banaras has been and continues to be one of the most visited holy places on the planet.
Because of this belief, dying persons and dead bodies from far-off places are brought to Kashi for cremation at the Manikarnika and other cremation sites (five principal and eighty-eight minor cremation/bathing sites lie along the Ganges).
Another important Banaras pilgrimage route is the Nagara Pradakshina, which takes two days to complete and has seventy-two shrines.

Banaras must have contributed to this famous export-trade, as is supported by the Jataka stories about Banaras merchants crossing deserts and seas.
However, its old glory in the realm of textile manufacture is re-affirmed by the Dilyalvadana, a Buddhist Sanskrit text of the same period, which makes references to such fabrics known as Kashikavastra, Kashi Kashikamsu and so on.
However, he is also silent about its textile industry.Damodara Gupta (eighth-ninth century A.D) in his kuttanimalam, describes Banaras in its full glory.

 Samvad India
Banaras is unique because here the divinity is accessible not only through temples, altars, saintly people, and places, but through the river Ganga who is as a mother goddess, a divinity in natural form.
Banaras is a 'living scripture' of Hindu thought.
Apart from having an unbroken tradition of Shastric learning, Banaras probably had the largest number of ashramas of ancient India which were the traditional universities of wisdom and enlightenment.

Lubin's Syllabus for "Banaras: Life and Death in a Holy City"
Note the interplay here between “timeless” ideas about Banaras, and the historical developments that helped to shape funeral practices in Banaras.
This interdisciplinary seminar explores the legends, the history, and the diverse social, political, and religious life of this ancient city on the Ganges River in north India: Banaras, the holy city of the god Shiva.
Why do such beliefs seem to obscure the boundaries between religions in Banaras?

In 1810 residents of Banaras led a successful protest against the imposition of a house tax which spread to other north Indian cities.
In the two years following, conflict among various Hindu communities contending for dominance under the British led to an expansion of the conflict into a Hindu-Muslim riot over processions and sacred space.
Unrest in Banaras typified the character of change and channels of contention that developed under colonial rule.
