For their hypothesis that the disputed mosque at Ayodhya was built by Hussain Shah Sharqi of Jaunpur in 872 AH (2 August, 1467 - 21 July 1468), the authors have relied on the manuscript of Francis Hamilton Buchanan (1807-1814) # Eur D 91, pp.
Francis Hamilton Buchanan, the British administrator who undertook the survey of India (1807-14), surveyed Ayodhya (1813-14) as a part of the survey of Gorakhpur district was the first person to have noted the inscriptions, both in Persian and Arabic, on the walls of the disputed structure of Janmasthan 'Baburi Masjid' (69).
The addition of the two directional compasses to the original manuscript of Ayodhya Mahatmya done in the 18th/early 19th centuries is apparently an interpolation which has been rejected by the scholars (18).
