The route to becoming an ayatollah ("sign of God" in Arabic) is quite unlike the path toward becoming, for example, a Catholic bishop.
There are also a small number of grand ayatollahs, such as the Najaf-based Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, widely known as the most learned Shiite cleric in Iraq, if not the world.
A typical ayatollah's career takes him to one of the Shiites' holy cities, like Najaf in Iraq or Qom in Iran.

Once, after reading an Ayatollah al-Sistani announcement that appeared to defy the quietist spirit espoused by Ayatollah Khoei, a Baghdad cleric and former representative of Ayatollah al-Sistani sent him a polite but firm letter reminding him of his past statements on religion and politics.
But clerics, relatives and Iraqi leaders who know the ayatollah say he adamantly opposes the kind of direct religious rule that prevails in his native Iran, where clergy exercise control over all aspects of social and political life.

Ayatollah Khomeini will have his place in the dark records of the Iranian contemporary history as a man full of hate and ignorance who chose the gradual destruction of a country for fulfilling his thirst of revenge and egocentrism.
