Autocephaly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Similarly, the Tewahedo Church of Ethiopia was granted autocephaly by the Coptic pope in 1950, and the Orthodox Church in America was granted autocephaly by the Patriarch of Moscow in 1970.
For example, the Cypriot Orthodox Church was granted autocephaly by the Council of Ephesus and is ruled by the Archbishop of Cyprus, who is not subject to any higher ecclesiastical authority, although his church remains in full communion with the other Eastern Orthodox churches.
In hierarchical Christian churches, especially Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches, autocephaly is the status of a hierarchical church whose head bishop does not report to any higher-ranking bishop.

 Autocephaly - OrthodoxWiki
Autocephaly (literally "self-headed") is the status of a church within the Orthodox Church whose primatial bishop does not report to any higher-ranking bishop.
The Church of Albania claimed its autocephaly in 1922, which was recognized by Constantinople in 1937.
The autocephaly of the Church of Cyprus was recognized at the Third Ecumenical Council (431).

Autocephaly is the recognition by sister churches that the territorial church of America is mature.
Autocephaly is a natural maturation process and progression of a daughter church into a sister church.

Byzantine response to OCA autocephaly - OrthodoxWiki
The Byzantine response to the autocephaly of the OCA consisted primarily in a number of letters and statements made in the early 1970s by the ancient autocephalous patriarchates of the Orthodox Church—the Churches of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem—along with the Church of Greece.
The grant of autocephaly served to regularize relations between the Church of Russia and the Metropolia and gave the latter much-needed self-governance.
Like most autocephalous Orthodox churches worldwide, the Byzantine churches rejected the grant of autocephaly by the Church of Russia to the American Metropolia (the former name of the OCA), and with the leadership of Patriarch Athenagoras I (Spyrou) of Constantinople, issued various responses detailing canonical, historical and practical arguments against the grant.

Religioscope - Macedonia: Church Deals Divides Public Opinion
Autocephaly, which is akin to ecclesiastical independence, has ramifications that go way beyond the clergy and religious people.
The autocephaly camp believes the Nis talks are part of a wider Serbian plan to destabilise Macedonia and are particularly angered by the fact that the agreement questions even the name of its church.
The row erupted after the two bodies signed an agreement on May 17, 2002, which abolished the Macedonian church's independent autocephalous status - where it appointed its own head and was not subject to the rule of an archbishop - and made it an autonomous entity within the Serbian Orthodox Church.

HTC: The Path to Autocephaly and Beyond
Autocephaly was simple the de jure recognition of the fact that its former American Diocese, established in 1794, was then, in 1970, a mature and independent Church.
The autocephaly received in 1970 healed this rupture with the Russian Church and, at the same time, preserved the independence and uniquely American mission and identity of the Orthodox Church in America.
The Orthodox Church in America became autocephalous in 1970, when the official proclamation, or Tomos, was approved by the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church.

 Unity and Autocephaly: Mutually Exclusive?
It must be borne in mind, however, that not until this recognition on the part of the Church of Constantinople was achieved, did the new autocephalous church consider herself equal to the existing autocephalous churches.
The starting point of any study regarding unity and autocephaly must be the study of the nature of the Church in general.
Hence, the canonical tradition of one bishop in one place reflects the ecclesiological principle of one Church headed by the Lord Jesus Christ.

 Autocephalous
It was used, for example, to justify the autocephaly of the Orthodox church of the new Polish republic following World War I. Usually, however, it has not been the concept of the state as such but rather that of the nation-state that has colored perceptions of autocephaly.
Unfortunately, the search for an adequate definition of autocephaly is not greatly simplified when one turns from modern church history to the more distant past, for the word "autocephalous" has had a variety of meanings over the centuries.
In all this controversy, one should also note the lack of correspondence between spiritual content and canonical forms, so that the very same church may be regarded by one party as autocephalous and by another as autonomous or possibly even as completely uncanonical.

Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church had been granted autocephaly by the Coptic pope in 1950, but had no say in the autocephaly of its integral Eritrean diocese due to the appeal of the Eritrean government to the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate for Eritrean Orthodox autocephaly.
It was formerly a part of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, its autocephaly being reluctantly recognized by the Ethiopian Patriarchate after Eritrea gained its independence in the 1993.
Tensions were - and in some cases remain - high between the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church on the one side and the Coptic Orthodox and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Churches on the other.

Religioscope - Macedonian Bishop Accused of Ecclesiastical Treason
Autocephaly, which amounts to ecclesiastical independence, has a significance that transcends the clergy and the faithful - an independent Macedonian church is seen as an essential part of the country's nationhood.
However, campaigners for autocephaly note that with the recognition of other Orthodox churches withheld since 1967, their struggle is still incomplete.
At a secret meeting held at an undisclosed address outside Skopje on June 26, Bishop Petar of Australia and New Zealand, who originally brought Jovan into the Macedonian church, was given the task of bringing his former protege and "renegade" bishop back into the fold.

 News and events
It is worth to note that granting autocephaly to a Church is a very inconsistent issue in the teaching and the understading of the Orthodox Church, although it is very important.
The Serbian Orthodox Church Commission thought that the right to grant autocephaly "belongs to the Ecumenical Patriarchate or to the future Ecumenical Council", contrary to its former opinion that "it is a competency of the Mother Church".
Therefore, the Macedonian Orthodox Church has asked for an autocephaly from the Serbian Orthodox Church, in order to resolve the misunderstandings.

 Belarusian Autocephalous Orthodox Church
More explicit and directly addressing the issue of Belarusan autocephaly was the 1924 tomes (charter) of the Ecumenical Patriarchate recognizing autocephaly of the Polish Orthodox Church, which said that the 1686 annexation of the Lithuanian (Belarusan) and Kievan (Ukrainian) Metropolinates by the Patriarchate of Moscow was contrary to canon law.
There are also some canonically established national Orthodox Churches that have declared their autocephaly but, mostly for political reasons, have yet not been recognized as such by the other Orthodox Churches.
Since in the past there never existed a Polish Orthodox Metropolinate, the autocephaly of the Polish Orthodox Church was recognized on the grounds that actually support recognition of the Belarusan and Ukrainian national Orthodox Churches.

 Religion in Eastern Europe
The possibility of a government proclamation of autocephaly was first discussed under the Hetmanate and was to have been implemented in the event that the pro‑Russian episcopate of the church refused to cooperate with the government on the matter.
It was in those years that the problems of Ukrainian Orthodox autocephaly and of relations between the Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches were first brought forward as matters of state policy.
The minister for religious affairs in the second Hetman government, Oleksander Lototsky, was now in a position to pose the question of autocephaly for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in absolutely unequivocal terms to those attending the sobor.

We do not ask for a Tomos of autocephaly from Constantinople, we are resolving the church problem between us and the Serbian Orthodox Church.
In this regard, in the Orthodox world whenever a question about the Macedonian Orthodox Church is raised, the representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church always point out that this is their internal problem.
As I already pointed out, the problem is not in the autocephaly, the problem is pastoral and concerns the name ‘Macedonian Orthodox Church’.

Theophilus Eardwine -- Sobornost: Uniting Orthodoxy in America
The OCA is the first church structure in America to be granted autocephaly by its mother church.
First, the autocephaly of the OCA, as a monastic friend of mine says, "didn't work." Only a few small jurisdictions in the US gathered around the OCA's banner, but the majority of American Orthodox Christians remained under the omophoria of their traditional foreign churches.
Whatever the canonical rights or traditions with regard to the grant of autocephaly to the OCA, the existential reality "on the ground," so to speak, is that it is not autocephalous in the way that any of the rest of the world's autocephalous Orthodox churches are.

 Congregationalist church governance
In both nationalism and autocephaly, one unifying doctrine is given local expression, according to differences in language and customs.
An older, competing, but somewhat related theory, is sometimes called nationalism (in the Reformed churches tradition), or autocephaly (in the Eastern Orthodox Church tradition).
In nationalism (in recent times, more accurately called "culturalism"), there is no institutional accountability to churches with separate general assemblies, although churches with separate histories typically form voluntary confederations with one another.

Start, No Chance Of Compromise, by M. GUROVSKI, April 5, 2002
The truth is that three preconditions are necessary for granting of autocephaly: approval of the mother church, approval by the Constantinople patriarchate, and approval of all the local churches.
Consequently, if the SOC were to grant autonomy or autocephaly to the MOC, that would not be accepted by the Eastern Orthodox Ecumene [religious community].
However, consultations indicate that the only factor with the authority to bestow full autonomy and autocephaly is the Constantinople Patriarchate - the Mother of all Eastern Orthodox Churches.

Note that Greek Bishop Janullatos was not spared attack in the Albanian press, here and in Albania, including debate in the Albanian parliament, for denouncing the NATO bombing in a chorus with many of his Greek compatriots.

The keynote address entitled: Gratitude and Renewal: The Spiritual and Missionary Significance of the Autocephaly, Patriarchate and of the Episcopal Ministry of the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church was given by His Eminence Daniel, Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina.
His Eminence said that “gratitude as a religious act of commemoration and thanksgiving is an act of culture of the human soul and of communion between the generations.” The autocephaly of the Romanian Orthodox Church was granted on April 25, 1885 with the signing of the Tomos by the Ecumenical Patriarch Joaquin IV.
Visibly moved by the triple anniversary of the Church, His Beatitude welcomed all the guests, expressing his gratitude for their presence.

It is obvious that the status quo in relations among the Ukrainian Orthodox churches will be maintained and that church hierarchs will not make any compromises for the creation of a united Ukrainian local church.
It is interesting that it was from the words of Vice Premier Nikolai Zhulinsky, who conducted negotiations with Bartholomew I in the name of the Ukrainian government, that Ukrainian Orthodox believers learned the opinion of the ecumenical patriarch with regard to unification.
According to the vice premier, Bartholomew I declared in conversation with him that after a united all-Orthodox council of the Ukrainian church autocephaly would be granted and that at the council a patriarch of the local Ukrainian Orthodox church should be elected.

The greater the daughter churches’ independence from their mother churches, the more freedom they have to act in concert with other Orthodox churches toward creating a unified Orthodox jurisdiction in this country.

If you think the situation with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the U.S.A. is bad now, wait until Patriarch Bartholomew recognizes the "autocephaly" of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Moscow Patriarchate.
So, just as the patriarch of Constantinople sold the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to Moscow 300 years ago, it will do so again.
Obviously, the two of them will make sure that "autocephaly" will be in name only, just as it is today "Ukrainian" in name only.

We the undersigned Bishops, on behalf of our clergy and laity of the International Communion of the Holy Christian Orthodox Church, hereby proclaim and declare the autocephalous and independence of our portion of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church

In Eastern Christianity, autonomy is the status of a hierarchical church whose head bishop is appointed by a higher-ranking bishop, often a patriarch, who has no other authority over the autonomous church.
