Vedas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Buddhism and Jainism, the authority of the Veda and the sacrificial cult are repudiated.
Hindu tradition also regards the Vedas as uncreated or eternal and being revealed to sages (Rishis).According to tradition, the hymns of the Rig-Veda Samhita were collected and arranged by Paila under the supervision of Vyasa.
In the dharmashastras, the study of the Vedas was regarded as a religious duty of the three upper varnas (Brahmanas, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas).

Atharva Veda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Atharva Veda (Sanskrit atharvaveda from atharvan, a type of priest + veda "knowledge" is a sacred text of Hinduism, part of the four books of the Vedas.
More specifically, the Atharva Veda was mainly composed by two clans of fire priests known as the Bhrigus (also called Atharvans) and Angirasas.
The Hindu texts too have taken a less than charitable view and have on occasions omitted the reference to the "Atharvan" text in the context of Vedic literature, though some attribute this to the fact that the Atharva Veda was a later addition chronologically.

Eventually it was acknowledged as one of the Vedas, especially after its adoption as a ritual handbook by the Brahmans, the fourth and highest class of priests officiating at the sacrifices.
The latter, especially the Vedas, are revered as apaurusheya (Sanskrit, "not of human origin").
The four Vedas were composed in Vedic, an early form of Sanskrit.

 The Vedas
The passages of the Vedas were eventually written in Sanskrit, we believe, near the end of the third century BC, and primarily consist of four collections called the Rig-Veda, the Sama-Veda, the Yajur-Veda, and the Atharva-Veda.
The final Veda, the Atharva-Veda, is attributed to a sage, or rishi, named Atharvan, and consists of a number of hymns and magical incantations.
Eventually it too was adopted as a ritual handbook by the Brahmans, the higest class of priests.

In addition the Veda mantras have to be recited in a certain cadence or rhythm to produce the necessary vibration and to have the desired effect of elevation of the Soul to spiritual heights and experience the Supreme.
This Veda is followed in the Northern parts of India and has mantras in the form of the Veda and Brahmanas (explanatory notes to the mantras) presented in the Satapatha Brahmana.

The word Veda means knowledge, and the Vedas are considered the most sacred scripture of Hinduism referred to as sruti, meaning what was heard by or revealed to the rishis or seers.
The first is sacrifice, study of the Vedas, and giving alms; the second is austerity; and the third is studying the sacred knowledge while living in the house of a teacher.
The Rig Veda does mention assemblies, but these were probably of the warrior elite, which may have had some controlling influence on the kings and the tribal priest called a purohita.
