 Asoka: 322-185 BC
In Asoka's empire, all religions were tolerated but Buddhism was preferred.
His son, Mahinda, became a Theraveda monk and was sent to introduce Buddhism to Sri Lanka.
The impacts of Asoka's reign are chiefly religious.

Ashoka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Additional information is contributed by the Edicts of Asoka, whose authorship was finally attributed to the Ashoka of Buddhist legend after the discovery of dynastic lists that gave the name used in the edicts (Piyadasi- meaning 'good looking', or 'favored by the Gods') as a title or additional name of Ashoka Mauriya.
The use of Buddhist sources in reconstructing the life of Ashoka has had a strong influence on perceptions of Ashoka, and the interpretations of his edicts.
Wells wrote of Ashoka: "In the history of the world there have been thousands of kings and emperors who called themselves 'Their Highnesses', 'Their Majesties' and 'Their Exalted Majesties' and so on.

 Asoka and the Buddha-Relics
Asoka's object in distributing the relics, in the countless stupas he himself was about to build, is represented as being highly approved of by the leaders of the Buddhist order.
The number of the stupas he is supposed to have built --84,000--is derived from the traditional number (which is about correct) of the number of sections in the Four Nikayas, that is, in Buddhist phraseology, in the Dhamma.
And it is there that Asoka, after breaking into all the seven stupas in vain (the Nagas protecting the eighth), finds the relics.(1) These he takes, and restoring the place where he had found them, establishes them in his own 84,000, not stupas, but viharas.

 The Edicts of King Asoka
Asoka emerges from his edicts as an able administrator, an intelligent human being and as a devoted Buddhist, and we could expect him to take as keen an interest in Buddhist philosophy as he did in Buddhist practice.
Asoka probably believed that the essentials (saravadi) of all religions were their ethical principles.
It seems that Asoka had been calling himself a Buddhist for at least two years prior to the Kalinga war, but his commitment to Buddhism was only lukewarm and perhaps had a political motive behind it.

Although the Hindu religion was dominant in India during Asoka’s reign, a relatively new religion had begun to challenge the ancient Hindu beliefs.
Unlike many ancient rulers who adopted a new religion, Asoka did not establish Buddhism as a state religion or insist that his subjects convert to it.
Asoka’s conversion to Buddhism may have influenced the way he chose to rule his kingdom.

He also had a profound influence on polity in Buddhist countries as monarchs throughout Asia were encouraged to look to his tolerant humane style of government as an ideal to be followed.

Generally believed to be the son of the Indian emperor Asoka, he is honoured in Sri Lanka as a founding missionary of that country's majority religion.
Its most outstanding ruler was Asoka, a man known more for his contributions to Buddhism than for his role as a monarch.
It was against this background of imperial administration and a changing socioeconomic framework that Asoka issued edicts that carried his message concerning the idea and practice of dhamma, the Prakrit form of the Sanskrit dharma, a term that defies simple translation.

It was this element, so prominent in the inscriptions of Asoka, that tempered the severity of Buddha's doctrine of Nirvana and made his system acceptable to the masses.
The advocates of this theory pretend that the rock-inscriptions of Asoka bear witness to the spread of Buddhism over the Greek-speaking world as early as the third century B.C., since they mention the flourishing existence of Buddhism among the Yavanas, i.e.
In order to secure that extinction of desire which alone could lead to Nirvana, Buddha prescribed for his followers a life of detachment from the comforts, pleasures, and occupations of the common run of men.
