In Christianity, an archbishop is an elevated bishop.

ARCHBISHOP - LoveToKnow Article on ARCHBISHOP
rhe archbishop of Canterbury exercises the twofold juristion of a metropolitan and a diocesan bishop.
At the present day, the title of archbishop is retained in e Roman Catholic Church, the various oriental churches, e Anglican Church, and certain branches of the Lutheran ivangelical) Church.
The metropolitans now immonly assumed the title of archbishop to mark their preninence over the other bishops; at the same time the obligation iposed upon them, mainly at the instance of St Boniface, to ceive the pallium (q.v.) from Rome, definitely marked the ifeat of their claim to exercise metropolitan jurisdiction dependently of the pope.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Archbishop
An archbishop or metropolitan, in the present sense of the term, is a bishop who governs a diocese strictly his own, while he presides at the same time over the bishops of a well-defined district composed of simple dioceses but not of provinces.
Archbishops are as a rule only titular, without any suffragans, but with their own diocese, the same as most of the Catholic metropolitans in the East.
The Anglican Church has two archbishops in England, one of Canterbury, the other of York, both of whom are invested with primatial dignity; and two archbishops in Ireland, one of Armagh, the other of Dublin.

Thus, while in the Slavic and Antiochian traditions, an archbishop is a senior bishop with an honorific title, a metropolitan is a bishop in charge of a major see and thus holding a territorial title.
The change in the Greek tradition came about because at one point in history, the diocesan bishops of ancient sees (which in the Greek world are pretty much all of them) all came to be styled as metropolitans.
The first hierarch of the other autocephalous churches are styled metropolitan or archbishop (or some combination).

Guardian Unlimited Special reports Interview: Rowan Williams
That means that, structurally speaking, in the church as I believe it to be, it really is wrong for an Archbishop to be the leader of a party; in a polarised and deeply divided church it's particularly important, I think, not to be someone pursuing an agenda that isn't the agenda of the whole.
It's not as if people are waiting for the church to say something before they make up their minds.
And it's got a lot to do therefore, with valuing and nurturing unity, not, as I've often said, not as an alternative to truth, but actually as one of the ways we absorb truth.

The name Archbishop was introduced by Capablanca, who had originally called this piece a Chancellor, perhaps because one of its meanings is "a Roman Catholic priest heading the office in which diocesan business is transacted and recorded" (Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th).
In Grand Chess, Christian Freeling took a similar approach to naming this piece, calling it a Cardinal, which is the highest rank in the Catholic Church besides the Pope.
At present, there is no name it is universally known as, though some come close.
