Aranyaka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Aranyakas (Sanskrit आरण्यक, Forest Books, Forest Treatises) are part of the Hindu Shruti; these religious scriptures are sometimes argued to be part of either the Brahmanas or Upanishads.
The Aranyakas are believed to have originated with the various mystical ascetic groups that developed in India.
The Aranyakas discuss philosophy, sacrifice (particularly the sacrificial fire), and the New Year holiday.

Introduction to The Principal upaniShads (Contd.)
The AraNyakas do not give us rules for the performance of sacrifices and explanations of ceremonies, but provide us with the mystic teaching of the sacrificial religion.
It is possible that certain sacred rites were performed in the seclusion of the forests where teachers and pupils meditated on the significance of these rites.
While the student (brahmacArin) reads the hymns, the house-holder (gRhastha) attends to the brAhmaNas which speak of the daily duties and sacrificial ceremonies, the hermit, the man of the forest (vAnaprastha), discusses the AraNyakas, the monk who has renounced worldly attachment (samnyAsin), studies the upaniShads, which specialise in philosophical speculations.

This is part of the part of the Aitareya Aranyaka, and the Upanisad begins with the Fourth chapter of the second Aranyaka, and comprises Chapter IV, V and VI.
The preceding parts deal with sacrificial ceremonies like mahavrata and their interpretations.
The first mention of the story is in the Rig Veda (X. 135) where we read how the boy Naciketas was sent by his father to Yama (Death), but was allowed to get back on account of his great faith, sraddha.

Sri Madhvacharya comments on the entire Mahaitareya, and so does Shadguru Shishya (who takes Aranyaka V as IV and does not consider the Mahanamni as a separate section).

" " In one sense the Aranyakas are old, for they reflect the very dawn of thought; in another they are modern, for they speak of that dawn with all the experience of a past day.
The Aitareya Upanishad is a part of the Aitareya Brahmana, and the Kaushitaki Aranyaka consists of three chapters, of which the third is the Kaushitaki Upanishad.
The Aranyakas are closely connected with the Upanishads, and the names are occasionally used interchangeably: thus the Brihad is called indifferently Brihad Aranyaka or Brihad Aranyaka Upanishad; it is attached to the Satapatha Brahmana.

Whatever the correct interpretation of the "ksatriya attribution" of these texts, (2) it must be reconciled with the fact that there is another early Upanisadic passage on karman and reincarnation, BAU 4.3-4, which is associated with Yajnavalkya, the brahmistha of brahmins, and which makes no...
This larger composition in turn may constitute a later expansion of Brereton's text, and recognizing this textual layering may make it possible to shed some light on a major difference in interpreting the concluding verses of BAU 3.
