The Rule of Faith in Patristic Thought
This is the faith of the Church Fathers and the Catholic Church.
The final persistent theme in the faith of the early Church Fathers is that Christ entrusted the entire deposit of faith to the Church and the responsibility for interpreting it in an orthodox and authoritative manner.
It is clear that the Fathers affirmed that all of the doctrines of the Catholic faith are to be found within the Bible.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: The Apostolic Fathers
Meagre as they necessarily are in their testimony, the Apostolic Fathers bear witness to the faith of Christians in the chief mysteries of the Divine Unity and Trinity.
The writings of the Apostolic Fathers are generally epistolary in form, after the fashion of the canonical Epistles, and were written, for the greater part, not for the purpose of instructing Christians at large, but for the guidance of individuals or local churches in some passing need.
The term Apostolic, however, was commonly used to qualify Churches, persons, writings, etc. from the early second century, when St. Ignatius, in the exordium of his Epistle to the Trallians, saluted their Church "after the Apostolic manner." In 1672 Jean Baptiste Cotelier (Cotelerius) published his "SS.

If those scholars are right to conclude that in the writings of the Apostolic Fathers there are practically no reflections of the synoptic gospels, the Apostolic Fathers stand almost as close to the earliest traditions about Jesus as the synoptic evangelists do.

 Evangelical Critics of the Eucharist
First, as even Catholic scholars admit, the Fathers were by no means unanimous in their interpretation, and yet Trent speaks of the 'unanimous consent of the Fathers' as the means of determining true apostolic tradition.
I would grant the point that the word "transubstantiation" is not specifically used by the Church Fathers (the word first appears in the 11th century debates on the Eucharist, and was affirmed by the Fourth Lateran Council [1215] and the Council of Trent), but this is not relevant.
This does not mean at all, however, that the church did not yet have a doctrine of the Eucharist; it does mean that the statements of its doctrine must not be sought in polemical and dogmatic treatises devoted to sacramental theology.

The Development of the Canon of the New Testament - Apostolic Fathers
The title 'Apostolic Fathers' refers to a circle of authors who are supposed to have had personal knowledge of some of the apostles, but did not actually belong to their number.
At most, the Apostolic Fathers disclose for this or that geographic area an amount of knowledge and use of several 1st century documents that later came to be gathered into what we know as the New Testament.
Four of these -- I Clement, Epistle of Barnabas, Didache, Shepherd of Hermas -- are part of this survey because they were cited approvingly by an early Christian authority.

Every Christian, all the Church Fathers, bishops, and saints who lived after the apostles (and some while the apostles were still alive) interpreted our Lord's words in John chapter 3 that to be "born again" and "born of water and the Spirit" refers to the Sacrament of Baptism.
Whence does this derive, except from an ancient and, as I suppose, apostolic tradition, by which the Churches of Christ hold inherently that without Baptism and participation at the table of the Lord it is impossible for any man to attain either to the kingdom of God or to salvation and life eternal?
