Anglicanism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anglicanism is most commonly identified with the established Church of England, but Anglican churches exist in most parts of the world.
The Anglican Communion codifies the Anglican relationship to the Church of England as a theologically broad and often diverging community of churches, which holds the English church as its mother institution.
The term Anglican (from Anglia, the Latin name for England) describes the people and churches that follow the religious traditions developed by the established Church of England.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Anglicanism
By forming a catena of Anglican High Church divines of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries on one side, and a catena of certain Fathers on the other, it was hoped that a quasi-continuous chain of Catholic tradition could be made to connect the Anglican Church of their day with Catholic antiquity.
The members of the Church of England are professed Christians, and claim to be baptized members of the Church of Christ.
A number of Anglican bishops and divines in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, while bitterly opposed to Rome, and loyally Protestant, stood above the prevailing low level of churchmanship, and put forward higher and philocatholic views, in the matters of Church authority, belief, and worship.

Historic Anglicanism has been based on the authority of Scripture, Tradition, and Reason, and the use of these authorities leads to wise, healthy, and holy Biblical Literacy (for example, in William Wilberforce's Evangelical understanding that human slavery is antithetical to God's Word as revealed in Scripture).
The problem with this mentality of some Anglican thinkers is that they have, alas, created a false “source” of truth, which is, actually, fallacy, counteracting the true and only one source of Truth, the Bible in the Holy Tradition of the Church.
Unfortunately, for Rev. Robinson and his like-minded Anglicans, this statement is a betrayal of the only One Truth, which is that of the Bible, kept and perennially taught by the Holy Tradition of the Church, led by God’s Holy Spirit.

Anglicanism or Episcopalianism is the general form of doctrine, worship and structure based on the tradition of the Church of England, which extends beyond membership in the Anglican Communion.

 The Church of England
From the time of the Elizabethan settlement on, the Church of England (the Anglican Church) attempted, with varying degrees of success, to consolidate its position both as a distinctive middle way between Catholicism and Puritanism and as the national religion of England.
The Puritan emphasis on individualism, however, made the establishment of a national Presbyterian Church during the Interregnum impossible, and the Restoration of the Monarchy under Charles II in 1660 facilitated the re-establishment of the Anglican Church, purged of Puritans, who split into various dissenting factions.
This process was facilitated to a considerable degree in part because many upper-class Anglicans, tired of doctrinal disputes, wanted only a rational, moderate, practical religion which would permit them to worship in peace.

First, not all that glitters is gold: what happened in Anglicanism as Anglo-Catholicism became larger and more noticeable in church life was not the conversion of most Anglicans to Catholicism but rather a toleration of Catholic trappings and of Anglo-Catholic beliefs as opinion, not essential matters of faith.
This place was a part of Anglo-Catholicism, an over 150-year-old movement in Anglicanism that had set for itself the quixotic goal of undoing the Protestant ‘Reformation’ among English-speaking people and after cleaning their church of heresy, presenting it for restoration of Catholic communion.
One of the ironies of the movement, and one of its weaknesses, is that although it all hung on Anglicanism’s nearly unique claim among Reformation-era churches to have retained the Catholic apostolic succession of bishops, historically very few Anglican bishops have supported the movement.

 What is Anglicanism?
Because various orthodox Anglicans want to deny the clear teaching of the Tradition on many of these points, they are not in accord with what the English Reformers thought or desired and threaten any notion of a truly Anglican identity that is not a merely lowest common denominator Christianity.
The question is: "Is there anything distinctive about Anglicanism, other than the fact that it in some way historically proceeded from the English Church?" If this is the only or primary definition of "Anglicanism," then Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists are "Anglicans" because they have certainly proceeded from the English Church.
