 Anapana Sati: Meditation on Breathing
Anapana sati, the meditation on in-and-out breathing, is the first subject of meditation expounded by the Buddha in the Maha Satipatthana Sutta, the Great Discourse on the Foundations of Mindfulness.
The Buddha laid special stress on this meditation, for it is the gateway to enlightenment and Nibbana adopted by all the Buddhas of the past as the very basis for their attainment of Buddhahood.
Then the Buddha has explained the manner in which anapana sati has to be cultivated.

 Anapana courses for school children
Anapana is the first step in the practice of Vipassana meditation.
Whether a children's Anapana course is held at a school or at a Vipassana meditation centre, it is essential that the students be given an opportunity to continue to practise Anapana for a short period each day after the course to yield the true benefits of the practice.
For this reason, it has had a profound appeal to people of all backgrounds, of every religion or no religion, from every part of the world.

Anapana Meditation for Children - Adaviyappa
This misunderstanding is based on a lack of experiential knowledge, and reinforced by various things being taught under the name of "meditation." This myth is shattered when one watches children coming from diverse socio-economic classes and groups, from various sects and castes.
There is a common misperception in India that meditation is something for old or retired people.
The following are some representative comments from children who took an Anapana course:

The entire path of Dhamma, rediscovered and taught by Gotama the Buddha more than 2500 years ago, is a universal remedy for universal problems and has nothing to do with any organized religion or sectarian tradition.
The Children's Course offers young people between the ages of 8 and 15 an introduction to Anapana meditation, which is a practice of the observation of natural breath to concentrate the mind.
During this course, the children learn how to practice Anapana meditation along with the five precepts.

 Selected discourses of Webu Sayadaw
The Buddha taught that sila is a prerequisite for samadhi.
Initially Anapana meditation is but a tool to concentrate the mind.
Webu Sayadaw said that when concentration is developed to a sufficient degree, the meditator automatically gains insight into the three characteristics of nature, anicca, dukkha, and anatta, if his mind is open to recognize them.

 Satipatthana - Definition up Erdmond.Com
Satipatthana is practiced with the aims of vipassana and most often in the context of Therevada_Buddhism although the principles are also practiced in most traditions of Buddhism which emphasize meditation such as the zen or soto zen tradition.
Sattipatthana meditation goes hand-in-hand with Vipassana, Samatha or calming meditation, and Anapana meditation.

EXPLORE: Buddhist meditation - Dictionary of Religion
The five basic methods of Buddhist meditation include anapana or "mindfulness of breathing", mettā bhāvanā or "meditation on friendliness", both samatha or "tranquility meditations", and "contemplation of impermanence", the "six element practice", and "contemplation of conditionality", all vipassana or "insight meditations".
The closest word for meditation in the classical languages of Buddhism is bhavana or "mental development" (Epstein 1995).
Samatha meditations usually precede and prepare for vipassana meditations.

If the persons, especially bhikkhus, who have completely practised Anapana Kammatthana for long, pass away, they do not putrefy or swell, though they are laid out for years.
( i.e, a man who has fully practised Anapana Meditation can stay without oxygen) there are many persons who stay in airless caves and drink only water for 49 days whilst practising Anapana Kammatthana meditation.
Besides, the persons who have ardently practised Anapana Meditation can proceed to endeavour for the attainment of miraculous powers - Abhinnanas, and Arahatship at least.

 Three Stages of Samadhi
The system of Lord Buddha is termed Anapana or observation of natural breathing.
There is however a system attributes to Lord Buddha, which does away with forcible pranayama or controlling of breath.
This seems to be the principal reason why Lord Buddha’s choice fell on this technical word among words appropriate for conveying the samadhic important and significance.

 What Buddhism Is
We have in Buddhism forty methods of concentration, of which the most outstanding is Anapana, that is, concentration on the incoming and outgoing breath, the method followed by all the Buddhas.
Anyway, such a practice, which gives supernormal powers in this mundane field, was not encouraged by the Buddha, whose sole object of developing Samadhi was to have the purity and strength of mind essential for the realization of Truth.
Ladies and gentlemen, I will now take up the philosophical aspect of Buddhism in the third stage of the Noble Eightfold Path, Panna or Insight.

By the fourth day the mind is calmer and more focused, better able to undertake the practice of Vipassana itself: observing sensations throughout the body, understanding their nature, and developing equanimity by learning not to react to them.
The next step is to develop some mastery over the mind by learning to fix one's attention on the natural reality of the ever changing flow of breath as it enters and leaves the nostrils.

 Mahasatipatthana Sutta: Introduction
Please practise in accordance with this Mahasatipatthana Sutta so that you can see why it is acknowledged as the most important Sutta that the Buddha taught.
Try to practise all the different sections from time to time as they are all useful, but in the beginning start with something simple such as being mindful while walking (see Iriyapatha Pabba), or the mindfulness of in and out breathing (see Anapana Pabba).
Then as you practise these you will be able to practise the other sections contained within this Sutta and you will find that all the four satipatthanas can be practised concurrently.

 Re: best vipassana book?
In the Satipatthana Sutta, Mindfulness of Breathing (Anapana Sati) is the first exercise in a meditation regime designed to lead to Vipassana.
With Anapana Sati every aspect of the meditative process is accompanied by respiration mindfulness: thus, contemplation of the body, feelings, states of mind, and mental objects is accompanied, concurrently, with mindfulness of the breath.
In this regard it is seen as both the initial and ultimate step in a rigorous program of training and development.
