Amun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amun (also spelt Amon, Amoun, Amen, and rarely Imenand, and spelt in Greek as Ammon, and Hammon) was the name of a deity, in Egyptian mythology, who gradually rose to become one of the most important deities, before fading into obscurity.
As Amun's cult grew bigger, Amun rapidly became identified with the chief God that was worshipped in other areas, Ra-Herakhty, the merged identities of Ra, and Horus.
In later years, due to the shape of a pool outside the sacred temple of Mut at Thebes, Menthu was replaced, as their adopted son, by Chons, the moon god.

 EXN.ca History
Amun was a mythical god, one of many that the Nubians worshiped.
This is why Amun is known as a creator god or god of fertility but he is also known as the hidden one, possibly because of his association with eight primeval Egyptian deities in the Hermopolis area.
Anderson says that this temple was dedicated to the god Amun and was one of many that were erected in his honour.

Al-Ahram Weekly Heritage Dialogue with Amun
One reason for the persistence of the old religion was that Amun, as god of the setting sun, was also venerated in Libya, indeed the worship of the ram-headed god was as deeply entrenched among the indigenous Berbers of the Libyan desert as it had been among the Ancient Egyptians.
Nevertheless, despite the closure of the temples the ancient god continued to be worshipped in the oasis, and he was probably venerated until the community converted to Islam in the Middle Ages.
Its name -- and its call to fame -- derived from the great Oracle of Amun, which in its day was venerated as much as the Oracle at Delphi and which lured pilgrims from all over the classical world.

He had told her to stress the name “Amun-Ra”: Amun united with Ra in his role of universal and eternal sun, source of light and life; and Ra united with Amun in his role of unseen mystery, of unanswerable question.

Divine Adoratrice of Amun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the role of the high priests of Amun changed from a mostly spiritual to a more 'earthly' role, the Divine Adoratrice became the main focus of the cult Amun in Thebes.
When the Napatan kings from Kush started to extend their power into Upper Egypt, the reigning God's Wife of Amun Shepenupet I was persuaded to adopt, Amenirdis, the daughter of Kashta as her heir.
The title Divine Adoratrice of Amun can be seen as a resurgence of the title God's Wife of Amun which had fallen out of use until the 19th Dynasty, where Ramesses IV's daughter Aset held the role, as well as the additional title of Divine Adoratrice.

The first pharaoh said to have sacrificed to this god was Bocchoris (718-712), but the report, which was written in the second century CE by the Roman author Tacitus, is late and belongs to a rather suspect text; as a consequence, we can not be certain that it is true.
Actually, Ammon is a bad rendering of Amun, but the name was nonetheless very fitting: ammos was the Greek word for 'sand' - in other words, the Greeks called the god Sandy Zeus.
However, this is just a hypothesis, and we can not be really certain about the origin of this cult - as is nearly always the case when we discuss an aspect of ancient religion.
