American Jews - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many American Jews also study Hebrew, the language of most Jewish religious literature, the Tanakh (bible), Siddur (prayerbook), and the modern State of Israel.
During the early 19th century, many secular Jews from the former Holy Roman Empire arrived in the United States and primarily became merchants and shop-owners.
In recent years, there has been a noticeable trend of secular Jewish Americans returning to a more religious Orthodox lifestyle, called Baal teshuva, although it is not clear how widespread or demographically important this movement is.

 American Jews and Israel's Development
Zionism, that is, Israel, becomes an avowal of faith, becomes a substitute religion for American Jews.
Israel was the esteemed mouthpiece in the matter of Judaism and religion, granted a monopoly to Orthodox Judaism, and with that able to decide over the concerns of the Diaspora.
In synagogues, the Israeli flag was hung next to the American Star-Spangled Banner; passages were inserted into the Sabbath and holy day prayers that dealt with Israel's welfare and security.

The first and most easily identified group is those that were born Jewish and still Judaism claim it as their faith.

In later years, many other congregations "Americanized" their rituals by playing organ music during services, permitting men and women to worship side by side, allowing men to prayer without the traditional prayer shawl and head covering, and establishing confirmation ceremonies for boys and girls.
These efforts sensitized American Jews to their distinctive identity and encouraged Jewish communities to establish their own schools, hospitals, and synagogues and appoint foreign rabbis as religious leaders.
American Jews avidly formed community and charitable institutions.

 immigration
Americanism is the spirit behind the welcome that America has traditionally extended to people of all races, all religions, all nationalities (in Cohen 1972, p.
A 1912 survey indicated that only seven of 100 Reform rabbis had officiated at a mixed marriage, and a 1909 resolution of the Central Council of American Rabbis declared that "mixed marriages are contrary to the tradition of the Jewish religion and should be discouraged by the American Rabbinate" (Meyer 1988, 290).
The argument was sometimes phrased in terms of an emphasis on the 'similarity of cultural background' of prospective immigrants, but again the underlying logic was that ethnic groups already in the country had legitimate interests in maintaining the ethnic status quo.

American Muslims vs. American Jews - article by Daniel Pipes
This Islamic-flavored totalitarianism holds that if only Muslims lived in strict accordance with the sacred law of their faith, the shari'a, they would regain the wealth and strength that was theirs at the height of Islam's glory in the Middle Ages.
These take their place alongside 19th-century myths of Jewish world domination and fantasies of revenge and physical extermination ("O Muslim, servant of God, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him"), often phrased in terms reminiscent of Nazi racial invective ("sons of monkeys and pigs and worshippers of evil").
The use of religious discourse and sacred images to support violent crimes can be found in all religions, but that does not make all their followers extremists.

Yet it says that divine promises to Jews - to bless those who bless them, to return them to their land - remain intact.
The scene repeats itself at houses of worship across the United States: a spiritual leader recites prayers in front of packed pews, including prayers for the safety and security of Israel.

This modern American Jewish polity is often noted as a quintessential "civil religion," a secular belief system that elicits deeply-felt allegiance of religious depth and proportion.
Zalman Posner, in championing the Orthodox Chabad Lubavitcher religious world view and bemoaning the fact that there are too many secular Jews who have been misguided by concepts of human universalism, addresses the religious root in the conflict between "Christian" identity and Jewry's traditionally separatist, and intolerant, core:

Noted the letter delivered by the American rabbis: “These prosecutions will never lead to the kind of Israel we want and desire: a Jewish state that celebrates the prophetic voice which has animated our people for centuries.
As a consequence of this artificial flattening and deadening of discourse, enforced by rage and even violence, the vital connection between Jewish culture and the struggle for social and economic justice is coming apart.
The letter also was signed by, among others, Rabbi David Saperstein, who heads the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, and Scott Sperling of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
