 B. R. Ambedkar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ambedkar and Buddhism by Urgyen Sangharakshita ISBN 0904766284
On 14 October 1956, Ambedkar took the Three Refuges and Five Precepts from a Buddhist monk in the traditional manner and then, in turn, administered them to the 380,000 men, women, and children who had come to Nagpur in response to his call.
Between 1927 and 1932, Ambedkar led his followers in a series of nonviolent campaigns to assert the right of the Untouchables to enter Hindu places of worship and to draw water from public tanks and wells.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar: The man who made all the differences
Therefore, Dr. Ambedkar exhorted Buddhists not to believe that the Buddha was an incarnation of Vishnu.
Ambedkar dedicated himself to the propagation of the Buddhist faith in India.

 Why Dr
According to Ambedkar, Buddhism fulfilled these requirements and so among the existing religions it was the only suitable religion for the world.
In the same year, Ambedkar delivered a speech on Buddha Jayanti day in Delhi, in which he attacked Hindu gods and goddess and praised Buddhism because it was a religion based on moral principles.
Ambedkar’s final religious act was to embrace Buddhism.

 ambedkar
Ambedkar knew that his dharmic option for the Sikhism and later on for Buddhism and against Islam and Christianity was completely in accordance with the Hindutvavadis placing greater importance to the affiliation to the Hindu Culture in general than to the affiliation to a particular traditional or new Hindu sect.
- Ambedkar's Buddhism obviously appears to be "a religion of liberation of the oppressed in society"[23].

Buddhism, for Ambedkar was a religion of reason and compassion.
Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow in Madhya Pradeh, in the Mahar caste.
As a realist Ambedkar knew much that passed muster under the rubric of Buddhism was not without blemishes and the insistence of monastic Buddhism in its ascetic renunciation from the world was not something he favoured.

Ambedkar (1891-1956) and his wife from Hinduism to Buddhism, marks the return of Buddhism to India after more than a millennium of decline and virtual extinction.

 Buddhism
Before Ambedkar there was Pandit Iyothee Thass, a Tamil `outcaste' who argued that Tamils were originally Buddhists and organised a thriving Buddhist movement around the turn of the century.
Ambedkar, for one, was alienated by much in the existing Buddhist communities in Asia, feeling that the Bhikku Sangha in particular had become in most cases too unworldly and parasitical.
In his own modernised Buddhist ``scripture'' of the Buddha and His Dhamma, Ambedkar tried to give an interpretation that would be at once a new religion and a liberation theology version of that.

HIMAL SOUTH ASIAN October 2003 Review Hindutva’s Hoax
And it is because Ambedkar had a different experience—as a Dalit—that he propounded a Buddhism that eschewed conventional Buddhisms (Hinayana, Mahayana, Theravada, Vajrayana) and called it “Navayana Buddhism, literally the “new vehicle”.
For her, “Ambedkar’s Buddhism contains the seeds of Indian Reformation and Enlightenment rolled into one”, and she concludes that “modern science is the standpoint of the oppressed”.
The role of Ambedkar’s experiences as an untouchable was perhaps central to his prajna (understanding) and his radical Buddhism.

Hindutva Series : Dr. Ambedkar and the Hindu Caste System
Ambedkar was born in the Mahar caste; he was pushed away as an 'untouchable';his very touch was supposed to make the water unclean; by his genius, by his learning and by his unbending will, he rose high and shaped the Constitution of India, and came to be called the Modern Buddha.
Ambedkar's entire life was dedicated to one purpose securing justice and equality to those people who are called 'untouchables'.
The fire of wrath against the orthodox among the caste Hindus blazed in Ambedkar's mind.

National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights (NCDHR)
For Ambedkar Buddha was one of the main inspiring personalities in history who raised a strong voice of protest against inequality between people and between men and women.
Buddhism Ambedkar was justifiably bitter and disenchanted with Hinduism and thus he changed his religion.
The two struggles shook the religious foundation on which the caste system is built.

 Gandhi's Ambedkar
Ambedkar then appended a devastating caveat, saying that the party did not even represent all Hindus, but only the upper castes.
Gandhi wished to save Hinduism by abolishing untouchability, whereas Ambedkar saw a solution for his people outside the fold of the dominant religion of the Indian people.
For the background to the statues and the reverence they command lies in the continuing social practices of the religion to which Shourie and I belong.

On the other hand, Ambedkar forcefully argued that both untouchability and caste system had their roots in the Hindu philosophy, which was based on the doctrine of inequality.
Even after his death in 1956, Ambedkar’s ideology has inspired and influenced the dalits of all religions — dalits in the Hindu fold, neo-buddhists, dalit Sikhs, dalit Christians and dalit Muslims, who together form nearly one-fourth of India’s population.
In the same period, Ambedkar came in close contact with the Indian Marxists and his caste and class paradigm got shaped in the course of this interaction.

He grew disillusioned with the slow pace of Hindu reform, however, resigned from the government and, shortly before his death in 1956, converted to Buddhism along with thousands of his followers.
During his college education in Bombay, a Sanskrit professor refused to teach an outcaste the language of Hindu scriptures.
The pair's greatest conflict occurred in 1932 when, thanks to Ambedkar's lobbying, the British agreed to grant communal electorates to untouchables separate from the Hindus.

Ambedkar tried his best to revitalize that religion in order to liberate at least one fourth of India's population from societal violence.
It is rightly said by M.N. Roy about Buddhism "that the defeat of Buddhism was the greatest single misfortune experienced by India".
On this aspect I may quote M.N. Roy who rightly said "Democracy is an empty concept if sovereignty does not mean the ability of the people to do things themselves".

Politics of Dalitism: creating Dalits among Dalits
The word Dalit was coined in post-colonial India by the disciples of Ambedkar.
It may be partially true that political empowerment is key to social and economic empowerment as suggested by Ambedkar but this cannot be the sole criteria for the social equality of Dalits.
While the disciples rejected Mahatma Gandhi for the sake of power and fulfillment of their personal ambitions, Ambedkar became a symbol of Dalit movement.

Ambedkar: Do we do justice to this great soul
Yes, I agree that a majority of these people are not empowered enough to do this; but where is a collective movement from the masses that would respect Ambedkar not just in speech, but in actions?
He offered the dalits an escape route by showing the path of Buddhism - he did not just lead them, he liberated them.

She added, "It was Ambedkar who made provisions for no discrimination on the lines of caste, creed, or religion; his aim was to build an Indian society on human values."

Similarly, Bhimrau Ramji Ambedkar (1893–1956) revived the myth of the Brahmans who fell from their caste and the tradition that Buddhism and Hinduism were once one, in order to enable Untouchables to gain self-respect by “reconverting” to Buddhism.
In more recent times, numerous self-proclaimed Indian religious teachers have migrated to Europe and the U.S., where they have inspired large followings.
Gandhi, for example, used his own brand of ahimsa, transformed into passive resistance, to obtain reforms for the Untouchables and to remove the British from India.
