Alan Watts - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While Watts was noted for an interest in Zen Buddhism, with its origins in China, his reading and discussions delved into Vedanta, "the new physics", cybernetics, semantics, process philosophy, natural history, and the anthropology of sexuality.
The pattern was set, in that Watts did not hide his dislike for religious outlooks that he decided were dour, guilt-ridden, or militantly proselytizing, whether found within Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism or Buddhism.
It was not long later that Watts felt forced to decide between the Anglican Christianity he had been exposed to and the Buddhism he had read about in various libraries, including Croshaw’s.

This celebrated author, former Anglican priest, and self-described “spiritual entertainer” was responsible for igniting the passion of countless wisdom seekers to the spiritual and philosophical delights of Asia and India.

Watts passed away in 1973 but remains one of the most celebrated spiritual thinkers of the turbulent post-war era.

Watts takes the reader back to the philosophical foundations of Zen in the conceptual world of Hinduism, follows Buddhism's course through the development of the early Mahayana school, the birth of Zen from Buddhism's marriage with Chinese Taoism, and on to Zen's unique expression in Japanese art and life.
This is a satisfying audio lesson on Zen, which Watts says is a way of life fundamentally different from any religion or science and that has a rich history of thinking regarding the question of individual being in relation to the world.
Throughout, Watts expresses himself in an infectious style, even in the very scholarly chapters on the history of Buddhism where he traces Zen from its origin in India, through the Buddha under the Po tree, to Ch'an in China, and finally into Japan.

Watts hasn't received the script yet -- "something about a scooter," he enigmatically says -- but the basic idea behind the hiring is in line with Disney's attempt to keep the animation stateside instead of their usual habit of exporting to Korea or elsewhere.
