At the centre of the old city is the Mashad al-Husain, the tomb of Husayn bin Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad by his daughter Fatima and Ali ibn Abi Talib.
The Kammuna family, relatives of the Shah of Iran, were custodians of the shrines for many years and effectively ran the city until it fell under the control of the British Empire in 1915.
Shi'a Muslims consider it to be one of the holiest places in the world, after Mecca, Medina, and Najaf.

FOXNews Channel's Bret Bair is reporting that Pentagon officials have confirmed not only that Karbala has been isolated (as reported by Command Post earlier), but also that the 3rd Infantry Division is now driving past Karbala toward Baghdad from the southwest.
Unnamed Pentagon officials have further confirmed that the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force has crossed the Tigris west of Al Kut (as we speculated earlier) and that a fierce battle to isolate and contain Al Kut is underway right now.
