The Age of Reason - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Age of Reason, written in parts during the 1790s and dealing in a systematic examination of organized religion, advocates a skeptical and rational examination of religion known as Deism.
Paine stresses his belief in the oneness of God, and the "Word of God" as exemplified by nature and the exercise of reason.
However, it is often ignored that central to this text is an argument in favor of the existence of a Creator, one based on reason and logic as opposed to the various fundamentalist modes of both religion and atheism.

Age of Enlightenment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Age of Enlightenment refers to the 18th century in European philosophy, and is often thought of as part of a larger period which includes the Age of Reason.
If the previous era was the age of reasoning from first principles, Enlightenment thinkers saw themselves as looking into the mind of God by studying creation and deducing the basic truths of the world.
When the political situation stabilized after the Peace of Westphalia and at the end of the English Civil War, there was an upheaval which overturned the notions of mysticism and faith in individual revelation as the primary source of knowledge and wisdom—perceived to have been a driving force for instability.

The Age of Reason: the fall and rise of Rome and the spread of English
Reason was employed in experimental enquiry and traditional beliefs were replaced by later beliefs.
It was also the language of the Roman Church and possessed the prestige of the ages; and it was a necessary part of any well-to-do child's education.
The Age of Reason encouraged men to think for themselves and not simply accept the wisdom of the ages.

Age of Reason by Thomas Paine
Age of Reason, Preface to Part II I HAVE mentioned in the former part of the Age of Reason that it had long been my intention to publish my thoughts upon religion; but that I had originally reserved it to a later period in life intending it to be the last work I should undertake.
It is evident that both these questions were put to the reason of the person to whom they are supposed to have been addressed; and it is only by admitting the first question to be answered affirmatively, that the second could follow.
The manner in which he was apprehended shows that he was not much known at that time; and it shows also, that the meetings he then held with his followers were in secret; and that he had given over or suspended preaching publicly.

The "Age of Reason" is thus for the first time given to the world with nearly its original completeness.
It appears clear from several allusions in "The Age of Reason" to the Quakers that in his early life, or before the middle of the eighteenth century, the people so called were substantially Deists.

In "The Age of Reason," Paine outlines his objections to theism and his belief in deism, and he dissects the inconsistencies in both the Old and New Testaments.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Age of Reason
At this age Christians come under the operation of ecclesiastical laws, such as the precept of assistance at Mass on Sundays and holydays, abstinence from meat on certain days, and annual confessions, should they have incurred mortal sin.
This, as a rule, happens at the age of seven, or thereabouts, though the use of reason requisite for moral discernment may come before, or may be delayed until notably after, that time.
The obligation of Easter Communion literally understood applies to all who have reached "the years of discretion"; but according to the practical interpretation of the Church it is not regarded as binding children just as soon as they are seven years old.

The Age of Reason - Thomas Paine
In The Age of Reason Paine declared that he did not believe in any religion and that all religions are institutions established for the enslavement of mankind.
Paine went on to strongly criticize the Bible and document many fallacies in the Bible, as well as giving an excellent account of how the Christian religion developed from its early pagan roots, an analysis which still holds weight to this very day.
Paine denied the truth of the story of Christ's birth and of his resurrection.

Catholic Culture : Document Library : Confirmation at the Age of Reason
The Church desires that confirmation be given at the age of reason (the age, that is, of the so-called "private communion").
Confirmation is very useful, indeed necessary, for the child to attain the use of reason in a true sense (that is, to prefer God to himself) and recognize sufficiently the God to whom his self-offering is directed as he stands at the threshold of life.
Deprived—I underline the point—deprived of confirmation from the age of reason to the age of eleven or twelve, the soul has been spiritually put to severe strain.
