Adonis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adonis, an annual vegetation life-death-rebirth deity, imported from Syrian into Greek mythology, always retained aspects of his Semitic Near Eastern origins and was one of the most complex cult figures in classical times.
Multiple versions of the birth of Adonis exist: The most commonly accepted version is that Aphrodite urged Myrrha to commit incest with her father, Theias, the King of Smyrna or Syria (which helps confirm the area of Adonis' origins).
Adonis was worshipped in unspoken mystery religions: not until Imperial Roman times (in Lucian of Samosata, De Dea Syria, ch.

ADONIS - LoveToKnow Article on ADONIS
It is probable that Adonis himself was looked upon as incarnate in the swine, so that the sacrifice to him by way of expiation on special occasions of an animal which otherwise was specially sacred, and its consumption by its worshippers, was a sacramental act.
The dispute between Aphrodite and Persephone for the possession of Adonis, settled by the agreement that he is to spend a third (or half) of the year in the lower world (the seed at first underground and then reappearing above it), finds a parallel in the story of Tammuz and Ishtar (see APHRODITE).
On the day following the image of Adonis was carried down to the shore and cast into the sea by women with dishevelled hair and bared breasts.

The name "Adonis" is a variation of the Semitic word "Adonai", which means "lord", and which is also one of the names used to refer to YHWH in the Old Testament.
Apollo is also said to be responsible because his son, Erymanthus, had seen Aphrodite naked and she blinded him for it.
The dispute between the two goddesses, in one version, was settled by Zeus; in others it was settled by Calliope on Zeus' behalf.

The Daily Star - Arts & Culture - The Adonis Festival of Byblos: An account by a 2nd century AD tourist
The gods interceded once again and Adonis was ordered to spend one third of the year with Aphrodite, a third with Persephone in the underworld and the remaining months with one of his choice.
That festival was the Festival of Adonis, in which sacrifices were made to the god and elaborate rituals held by the cult of Adonis, centered at Byblos, modern day Jbeil.
Aphrodite (Astarte) was the embodiment of generation and procreation in perpetuity, Adonis assumed the role of the youthful male god, personifying the transitory seasonal sequence of vegetation.

Golden Bough Chapter 29. The Myth of Adonis.
The worship of Adonis was practised by the Semitic peoples of Babylonia and Syria, and the Greeks borrowed it from them as early as the seventh century before Christ.
The true name of the deity was Tammuz: the appellation of Adonis is merely the Semitic Adon, “lord,&; a title of honour by which his worshippers addressed him.
The dispute between the two goddesses of love and death was settled by Zeus, who decreed that Adonis should abide with Persephone in the under world for one part of the year, and with Aphrodite in the upper world for another part.

But the Greek myth of Adonis, although he certainly was a Semitic fertility god representing the spirit of vegetation-perhaps an avatar of the Ugaritic Baal, with its romantic twist, has elements of other non-Semitic deities in it.
Zeus became the arbitrator in settling the dispute between the two goddesses, and it was decided that Adonis should live one-third of the year with Aphrodite, one-third with Persephone, and the final third with whichever he pleased.
Adonis is derived from the Canaanite title, adon, meaning lord, or the Phoenician term, adoni, my lord.

Poetic verse is always subject to this standard.

Adonis believes poetry is thus driven by a social functionalism expressed in two main directions "one ideological of religious origin and the other musical, in the form of singing and tarab."
