Abraham Joshua Heschel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heschel then goes to explore the problems of doubts and faith; what Judaism means by teaching that God is One; the essence of man and the problem of man's needs; the definition of religion in general, and of Judaism in specific, man's yearning for spirituality.
Heschel wrote a series of articles, originally in Hebrew, on the existence of prophecy in Judaism after the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE.
Heschel saw the teachings of the Hebrew prophets as a clarion call for social action in the United States, but his social activism was at the time dismissed as unimportant by most JTS faculty.

Rabbi Scheinerman's Home Page - Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
Heschel's hasidic background taught him the importance of human experience as a component of religion, especially the sense of awe and wonder with which a person approaches God's presence in his/her life.
Heschel affirmed that revelation occurred at Mt. Sinai, but everything which came afterward (the written Torah) is a midrash on that experience of revelation.
Heschel understood God is pervading the universe and including all that is contained in the universe; our awareness of God's unity entails a demand upon our lives.

MyJewishLearning.com - History & Community: Abraham Joshua Heschel
A second experience that, according to Heschel, awakens the individual to the presence of God is a pervasive, underlying anxiety that he calls “the need to be needed.” Religion entails the certainty that something is asked of man and that he is not a mere bystander in the cosmos.
For Heschel, Jewish survival is a spiritual act.
Heschel stands in that stream of modern Jewish thought which emphasizes the limitations of reason to grasp the full significance of the religious life.

Abraham Joshua Heschel: Prophetic Witness [Book Review]
For Heschel, though, it was a vehicle for bringing the spiritual riches of the tradition into a new Jewish milieu, showing that traditional Judaism could not and should not be surpassed by Jewish modernity.
For Heschel brought to America spiritual and intellectual resources that were not present here, certainly not during the years of his formation.
The dissertation shows Heschel’s desire to bring modern Jews, indeed modern people in general, back to a relationship with the living God of the Bible.

 Exemplars - BCM - Summer 2004
HESCHEL DISTINGUISHED between religion and spirituality by referring to theology and what he called "depth theology." "The theme of theology," he wrote, "is the content of believing.
During those years, Heschel's became the principle voice calling Jews, and an ever-widening circle of Christians, to a joyful, loving, and morally challenging spirituality, one founded on an awe-filled response to what he called the "Divine pathos," the Holy One's incalculable love for all creation.
Heschel's was a uniquely effective voice calling for reverence among people in differing religious community, insisting that "God is either the Father of all men or of no men."

 ABRAHAM JOSHUA HESCHEL:OUR GENERATION'S TEACHER
Heschel taught that religion begins with a question and that theology begins with a problem.
And, of course, it was Heschel who represented the diverse and scattered Jewish community in urging the Pope to rectify a 1900-year-old injustice which had caused untold misery and interreligious animus.
Similarly, Heschel viewed prayer not as an encounter with God, but as an event of being encountered by God.

 SocialAction - Profiles of Changemakers
Heschel's concept of divine pathos, a category central to his theology, is mirrored in King's understanding of the nature of God's involvement with humanity.
Heschel, for example, was particularly touched during the march from Selma to Montgomery by King's references to the Exodus in his sermon, describing three types among the Israelites who left Egypt and he viewed King's choice of the Exodus over Jesus as a significant moment in Christian-Jewish relations.
For both, the theological was intimately intertwined with the political and that conviction provided the basis of the spiritual affinity they felt for each other.

The Sabbath -- Its Meaning for Modern Man -- Abraham Joshua Heschel Ilya Schor
Elegant, passionate, and filled with the love of God's creation, Abraham Hoshua Heschel's "The Sabbath has been hailed as a classic of Jewish spirituality ever since its original publication in 1951-and has been read by thousands of people of many faiths seeking meaning in modern life.
Judaism, he argues, is the religion of time: it finds meaning not in space and the material things that fill it but in time and the eternity that imbues it, so that "the Sabbaths are our great cathedrals."
In this brief yet profound meditation on the meaning of the Seventh Day, Heschel introduced the enormously influential idea of an "architecture of holiness" that appears not in space but in time.

The Morals of the Story - Does Jim Wallis' leftist, Bible-based book get it right? By Elizabeth A. Castelli
"Religion," "spirituality," and "faith" are used throughout the book generically, but also synonymously with "gospel faith," "prophetic religion," and "Christianity." There are occasional token references to Jews (specifically Abraham Joshua Heschel, Sen. Joe Lieberman, and Michael Lerner), Islam (whose adherents are sometimes "Moslems" and sometimes "Muslims"), and a vague confraternity of "religious seekers."
Meanwhile, an important foundational layer of his argument requires the acceptance of a particular evangelical Protestant theological claim about the nature and character of God.
God's Politics consistently engages in rhetorical slippages that will certainly be troubling to people outside of Wallis' Christian frame.
