Islam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Modern Islamic history begins in Arabia in the 7th century with the emergence of the prophet Muhammad.

History & info - the Islamic calendar
As the year in the Islamic calendar is about 11 days shorter than the year in the Christian calendar, the Islamic years are slowly gaining in on the Christian years.
The 1st day of the 5th month of C.E. 20874 in the Gregorian calendar will also be (approximately) the 1st day of the 5th month of AH 20874 of the Islamic calendar.
Note that although only 2003-622=1381 years have passed in the Christian calendar, 1423 years have passed in the Islamic calendar, because its year is consistently shorter (by about 11 days) than the tropical year used by the Christian calendar.

Atasoy: Islamic Revivalism and the Nation-State...
Once again, it must be noted that the current wave of Islamic revivalism cannot properly be seen as a traditionalist desire to return to a "golden age", nor can it be seen as a "fundamentalist" rejection of modernity.
What makes this project of modernism an Islamic one is that it incorporates production and consumption patterns in the national economy through a policy of Islamic regulation of social life that would eventually guarantee the constitution of a "virtuous" society.
In this way, Islamic opposition to the Kemalist project gradually began to be part of the political alliances of the multi-party regime.

 Islamic Art Indroduction
From the fourteenth century onward, especially in eastern Islamic lands, the arts of the book provide the best documentation of courtly patronage.
This preoccupation with beautiful writing extended to all arts—including secular manuscripts; inscriptions on palaces; and those applied to metalwork, pottery, stone, glass, wood, and textiles—and to non-Arabic-speaking peoples within the Islamic commonwealth whose languages—such as Persian, Turkish, and Urdu—were written in the Arabic script.
Islamic art is perhaps the most accessible manifestation of a complex civilization that often seems enigmatic to outsiders.

Institute for the Secularisation of Islamic Society
In a theocracy of the type that Islamic fundamentalists wish to establish, sovereignty belongs to god, but in a democracy sovereignty belongs to the people.
The Institute for the Secularisation of Islamic Society (ISIS) has been formed to promote the ideas of rationalism, secularism, democracy and human rights within Islamic society.
We believe that Islamic society has been held back by an unwillingness to subject its beliefs, laws and practices to critical examination, by a lack of respect for the rights of the individual, and by an unwillingness to tolerate alternative viewpoints or to engage in constructive dialogue.

Creationism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While the term creationism was not in common use before the late 19th century, creationists consider their primary source to be the ancient Hebrew text describing creation according to Genesis and see themselves as being the philosophical and religious offspring of the traditions that held that text sacred.
Creationism or creation theology encompasses the belief that human beings, the Earth, and the universe were created by a supreme being or deity.
Proponents of creationism claim that it has a rich heritage grounded in ancient recorded histories and consistent with scientific observation, whereas opponents, particularly of what they regard as the pseudosciences of creation science and intelligent design, claim that those are a modern reactionary movement against science.

Islamic calendar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 638 (AH 17), the second Caliph Umar began numbering the years of the Islamic calendar from the year of the Hijra, which was postdated AH 1.
The Islamic calendar or Muslim calendar (also called "Hijri calendar", Arabic التقويمالهجري) is the calendar used to date events in many predominantly Muslim countries, and used by Muslims everywhere to determine the proper day on which to celebrate Islamic holy days.
The predecessor to the Islamic calendar was a lunisolar calendar which used lunar months, but was also synchronized with the seasons by the insertion of an additional, intercalary month, when required.
